Anna Hursey from England, Tom Jarvis and Wales, both won Sweden, through their opening races at the Europa Smash in Malmo.
Jarvis (WR 84, shown above) was the first match 4-1 behind Ecuador’s Alberto Mino (WR 143) in the first of three qualifying rounds, but went through the next seven points and took the match 11-8 at his third game point.
There was another seven points in Game Two when he came down from 5-4 to win 11-5, and he completed a simple victory in three upright, for the loss of only four points in the third.
He will then be confronted with Yoker Sign Simon Berglund (WR 612) of the host country, which today achieved a good 3-2 victory over CSaba Andras (WR 113) of Hungary-13-11 in the fifth.
Hursey (WR 71) came by 3-1 against Jiamuwa Wu (WR 116) from Australia in her first game in the Singles for Women.
Hursey led the first 8-2, but Wu came back to deliver it and the players were to trade for the rest of the game, both missed two game points before Wu got it on the board 15-13.
Hursey was behind the second 4-2, but that was a turning point when she went at a point of six consecutive points, and nine out of 10, to level the game.
She led the third everywhere and then took the lead over the fourth at 8-4, only for WU to fight back to level. But three of the following four points won it for Hursey, who then plays Margyta Pesotska (WR 99) of Ukraine.
