Tom Aspinall’s father and coach is not convinced Ciryl Gane can find success at UFC 321.
Aspinall will defend the UFC Heavyweight Championship against Gane in the main event of UFC 321 on Saturday. The two will clash at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It will be Aspinall’s first fight as an undisputed titleholder, as he held interim gold before Jon Jones retired.
During the UFC 321 countdown show, Aspinall’s father explained why he doesn’t believe Gane can cause his son any problems on fight night (via Bloody elbow).
“Ciryl Gane is a good points fighter,” said Andy Aspinall. “You know, he’s a kickboxer and toucher. He finishes fights, but he takes a lot of shots to finish people. Tom is much more clinical. I don’t think he [Gane’s] skills will cause [Tom] no problems at all.”
During a media bash with reporters in September, Gane said he will be well prepared for Aspinall thanks to the time he has put in in the gym with his own head coach.
“Sometimes life is a little strange because there are bad results and then people think you’ve never worked on your ground game, your wrestling,” Gane said. “But believe me, as someone who also comes from Thai boxing, I have a team behind me. My coach Fernand Lopez, we have been working on our ground game.”
“These are experts. We know exactly what we’re doing. Sometimes I haven’t been able to show it and that’s on me, but this time, believe me, I’ve worked, and hopefully this time I can show it.”
It won’t be long before fight fans find out who will leave Abu Dhabi with the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Championship. Be sure to follow the BJPenn.com homepage for live coverage of UFC 321 on Saturday.
