What is it like to visit Cala Gonone in Sardinia? We were here for the first time in 2015, and this became our absolute favorite place on the island. Of course we wanted to come back in 2025, now that we had the chance. Again, it was a wonderfully beautiful boat trip on the Turquoise blue water!
Cala Gonone on the Sardine
Cala Gonone is a cozy small coastal resort that attracts many tourists in the summer season. First of all you come here to rent a boat, or to keep a boat excursion, and therefore experience the fantastic coastal strip with small bays, beaches and caves.
Cala Gonone is located on the coast, on the east side of Sardinia.
To drive to Cala Gonone
You can go to Cala Gonone from the north or south. It doesn’t matter which path you take, you can count towards the end with a steep and winding road with lots of hairpin curves.

To visit Cala Gonone
Cala Gonone is a fairly small town, but in the summer it is still lively here, given all the tourists and holiday activities.

There is a central sandy beach that works great for sun and bath. However, this is not the best beach – the most beautiful beaches in Cala Gonone can only be reached by boat!

We had decided to meet each other in Cala Gonone with the Swedish camper couple Thomas and Anna-Karin, whom we met in Corsica a week earlier. So nice to see you again! Of course we had a lot to talk about, and that did that about a pizza and a beer in the pizzeria Uncle Padrillo. Here we have really good pizzas and also good service.

To rent a boat in Cala Gonone
Above all, we naturally wanted to be on the water! You can choose between following a larger excursion boat or renting your own pulpit. We chose it later and walked around among the small rent offices to find a boat to rent. It turned out that the boats almost Be over, but not really.
We rented a boat with our new friends and received information about how to go. The recommendation was to drive the furthest away, to Cala Coloritzé, and then slowly tough back with a random number of stops on the way …

Said and ready, we left along the coast with Peter behind the wheel. The trip to Cala Coloritzé lasted about 45 minutes, while the water sprayed around us and we could explore on the beautiful mountains along the coast.

A nice day on the water!
It was really a great day on the water! The mountains are dramatic and offer delicious imaginative shapes.

The water has a beautiful turquoise blue color, and there are many boats tough along the coast, ranging from small steering pulps to larger sailing boats and excursion boats with many tourists on board.

The sandy beaches are fantastically beautiful, with soft fine with a sandbarry. The special thing about these beaches is that they can only be reached by boat, because there is no way to them from the country.

On a few beaches you can drive to the beach by boat and let go of the passengers. Then the captain has to drive away again, anchor a little outside the beach and then swim ashore. Everyone has to swim on other beaches to get ashore, sometimes a relatively long distance. At least it is so during the high season, otherwise it would be full on the beaches.

We decided to eat our lunch bag with a crowded lunch on one of the beaches where the captain can let go of the passengers. A narrow “corridor” was full of buoys and the boats had to stand in line in order to drive into the beach. Yes, the beaches are small and it will be busy during the high season! If you want an even more exclusive experience, it might be worth striving for before or after the season, outside the ailboluta Peak.

There are also various delicious caves along the coast. We anchored the boat and swam to some of them, and then walk in. Really cool! Also a good place if you want to shade for a while …
In summary it was a wonderful beautiful day on the water and on the beaches, in Cala Gonone. We must say a small paradise that this is the case!

Tip: to think for a boat trip in Cala Gonone
You can choose between booking yourself on a tourist boat or renting a steering chair. If you are going to rent a boat during the high season, it might be good to be on time. We asked the night before and then there were only a few boats to rent.
When booking we had to pay a deposit with cash and we were able to pay the remaining amount with tickets. For a complete rent for a boat for 4-5 people, a total of almost 400 euros can be counted during the high season, including fuel. There are also smaller boats for rent that are suitable for two people.
To bring for/on the boat trip
- Cash and payment cards (for renting the boat)
- Identification (for renting the boat)
- Lots of water and/or other drink
- Lunch bag/snacks (after you have left the harbor, there is nothing to buy)
- Bathing
- Swimwear
- Cap/sun rug hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Possibly a parasol
- Bath shoes (not necessary, but can be good in some places)
- Snorkel and Cyclops

Where can you live or stand at the camper?
There are various hotels in Cala Gonone. If you come with a camper, there is actually only one place to “choose” on: Camping car Palmasera. This is a nice place with nice places and a very good location. We thought the price was a bit juicy (we paid around 50 euros/day incl. Electricity) – not least, you had to pay extra to use the showers – but we were still happy with our visit here.

More to see and in the neighborhood
If you like walking and dramatic mountain formations, we can recommend an excursion to Canyon Gorropu, half an hour from Cala Gonone by car.
