The Tamil Nadu government will reiterate its demand for a greenfield airport in the industrial city of Hosur after the Defense Ministry rejected the sites proposed by the state government.

One of the reasons cited by the ministry is that the locations were required by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

Sources said business line that the state government plans to repeat its demand for the airport as the city is quite small and it may be difficult to look for alternative locations.

The Shoolagiri taluk (located between Berigai and Bagalur) on the Krishnagiri-Hosur highway was one of the two locations identified for the Hosur airport. The other site is 15.5 km from the Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL) airstrip, east of Hosur town.

The greenfield project also faced a potential roadblock in the form of a clause, which disallows the development of any other airport within 150 km of the Bengaluru airport until 2033.

However, a state government official said that since it will take almost a decade for the Hosur airport to come up, the current clause will not be an issue.

Political issue

Sources also note that the Defense Ministry’s rejection of the state government’s proposal may be a major political issue as there are still three months to go for the Assembly elections.

The Tamil Nadu government has been working hard over the past month to ensure that the much-awaited airport projects – in Parandur and Hosur – will take off in the coming years to support the state’s economic development, especially in the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor.

Hosur is leading the rapid industrialization in western Tamil Nadu, supporting sectors from electric vehicles to electronics. An airport will help the region take a leap forward, improve connectivity, attract global investments and create jobs for the youth, while creating new opportunities for SMEs in supply chains, Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said earlier. business line.
