Three takeaways: Jets fall below .500 in 6-3 loss to Boston

Morgan Barron opened the scoring 5:59 into the first period, but the Jets quickly gave up three straight goals in less than four minutes to give Boston a 3-1 lead. Alex Iafallo capped the five-goal opening period with his fifth of the season, making the Bruins score 3–2 after twenty minutes.

Hampus Lindholm scored his second of the season in the second period to make it 4-2 before Winnipeg struck late in the stanza of the power play, with Gabriel Vilardi scoring his 14th to bring the Jets within one. Elias Lindholm restored Boston’s two-goal cushion late in the third period, and David Pastrnak capped his four-point night with an empty-net goal to seal the 6–3 victory for the B’s.

The loss drops Winnipeg to .483 on the season at 14-15-1.

Special teams are struggling

Tuesday evening against Dallas starsthe Jets held Dallas to just 19 shots on goal, but still fell 4-3 in regulation. A big reason for this was a lackluster penalty kill, as Dallas converted twice on four power play opportunities, while Winnipeg went 0-for-4 on its own power play.

Against Boston, it was a similar story, except the Bruins scored back-to-back power-play goals just 2:04 apart in the first period. Pastrnak fired a shot from the top of the right circle past Eric Comrie to tie the game at 1-1 with his 12th of the season, before Casey Mittelstadt put Boston ahead with his seventh after a clear clearance from Mason Lohrei.

Vilardi did score on the power play for the Jets, but they failed to capitalize on three other opportunities.

Bursts of energy

How many times have we seen the Jets get burned in recent weeks by goals coming minutes or even seconds apart?

On December 1 in Buffalo, they gave up two goals in 15 seconds of the first period. On December 6 in Edmonton they surrendered two in 1:47. Tuesday against Dallas, two more came in the opening 2:31 of the second period, and now against Boston the Jets allowed two power-play goals in 2:04.

This has become a disturbing trend, and it is absolutely killing this team, especially when they try to make late attempts to tie games. It’s a big reason why the Jets have six one-goal losses this season.

Sink

The Jets are literally sinking in the standings. They now sit sixth in the Central Division, just one point ahead of the tie with the Nashville Predators for the last time. Winnipeg is ranked 28th overall and is 2-7-1 in their last ten games in the league.

Right now, the Jets need something to get going quickly or they risk finding themselves at the bottom of the league by the new year and miles away from a playoff spot.

Winnipeg will look to end its three-game losing skid Saturday night at home against Washington Capitals in Nino Niederreiter’s 1,000th NHL game. The Puck Drop is scheduled for shortly after 6:00 PM CST on Sportsnet West.
