Threads receive ‘ghost messages’ that disappear after 24 hours

Meta has been focusing more and more on Threads lately, and that’s reflected in how often it’s added new features to the platform. Early last month, the social media app announced long messages. As part of that feature, users can now post up to 10,000 characters at a time. Now Threads is getting what Meta calls a “disappearing messages” feature “ghost messages.” Meta began testing this feature in April, alongside other features now available on Threads.

All replies to your ghost posts will end up in your Threads DMs

Threads’ new ghost posts feature lets you share your thoughts or join a conversation that disappears after 24 hours. You can create a ghost post on mobile by turning on the switch with the new ‘ghost’ icon on the app’s compose screen. The feature is a handy addition for anyone who likes to post something but doesn’t want it to appear in their Threads profile.

Every time you publish a ghost post on Threads, others will see that there is a dotted bubble around it. This gives others the idea that it is a disappearing post. What’s interesting is that the responses to such posts straight into your DMs and will not appear on your timeline.

Another thing to note is that other Threads users cannot see the number of likes, replies, or the names of ghost post viewers. However, they can still see smiley icons under the disappearing messages. This gives people an idea that others have commented on or liked the posts.

You can still view the post again from the ‘archived’ section

Not to mention, you can still view ghost messages in the “Archived” section of Threads’ settings menu. Think of this feature as Instagram Stories that are only available for 24 hours. Meta, in the announcement postnotes that this feature is for those who want to “share unfiltered thoughts and new recordings without the pressure of permanence or polish. Here today and gone tomorrow, you can be sure to try new things and post spontaneous thoughts.”
