This day in Braves history: Braves trade Tommy Hanson to the Angels

1961 – Braves catcher Joe Torre finishes second in the National League Rookie of the Year race behind Cubs outfielder Billy Williams.

1970 – The Braves acquire 48-year-old knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm from the Cubs in exchange for minor league first baseman Hal Breeden.

1999 – Braves minor leaguer Roger Blanco is murdered by robbers in Catia La Mar, Venezuela. Atlanta acquired Blanco in 1996 in the Mark Whiten trade.

2012 – Atlanta trades Tommy Hanson to the Angels in exchange for reliever Jordan Walden. Hanson made 31 starts for the Braves in 2012, producing a 4.48 ERA and 4.57 FIP in 174 ⅔ innings pitched. Unfortunately, the 2013 season would be his last in the Majors. Walden spent the next two seasons with Atlanta, appearing in 108 games while posting a 3.15 ERA and 2.80 FIP in 97 innings.

1948 – Lou Boudreau is selected as American League MVP. Boudreau was almost traded to the Browns earlier this season, but fan protests helped nullify the trade.

1953 – Player representatives reject Commissioner Ford Frick’s plan for a conference on their retirement after he rules out the presence of their attorney.

1981 – Yankees lefty Dave Righetti wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

2000 – The Yankees sign right-hander Mike Mussina to a six-year deal worth $88.5 million.

2010 – The Rockies and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki agree to a seven-year extension worth $134 million.

2012 – The Mets give third baseman David Wright the largest contract in team history when he agrees to an eight-year, $138 million extension.
