Goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, the former’s first in the Premier League this season, got the champions back on track at the London Stadium.
Liverpool had gone into the match on a run of nine defeats in twelve games, three in a row by a three-goal margin.
It was the club’s worst run of form since 1954 and has increased pressure on Slot’s position as manager, just months after the Dutchman guided Liverpool to the league title.
Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time after three points and a clean sheet, Slot expressed his relief at securing a much-needed win.
“There is certainly a feeling of relief, because when you have lost so often, winning is important. We hardly gave away any chances. We were able to create chances ourselves. In other matches we have given away much more than today.”
“It helps if you’re not 1-0 down after five minutes, because then you’re more open. We played the game I wanted us to play.”
“What I saw meant a lot to our players and our fans. The fans had to come a long way to support a team that was performing poorly. On Wednesday we face Sunderland. It’s a very busy schedule for everyone. This is a good first step for us: we won and got a clean sheet.”
Liverpool boss Slot discusses the decision to drop Salah
Slot made changes to the team that lost to PSV Eindhoven in midweek. The biggest decision was the omission of Mohamed Salah, who has struggled to match last season’s performances.
Asked for an explanation for the omission of the reigning PFA Player of the Year, Slot said he was keen to renew his squad amid a busy run of fixtures.
“We play a lot of games. In ten days we played four. These players are such quality players. Mo has been so important to the club and will be so important to the club, so let’s see what happens on Wednesday. [against Sunderland].”
