Blending is not only an important step in whiskey production, it is the step to elevate the pursuit into the realm of the art form. The traditional practice involves combining carefully aged barrels of liquid into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Each barrel matures in its own way, even if it comes from the same distillation. Blending explores and enhances the desired flavor profiles. It also provides balance and consistency, which is why the vast majority of today’s whiskeys are made in batches – whether single malt, blended scotch, bourbon or rye.
It’s tempting to overemphasize – or even romanticize – the role of distillation, with its gleaming copper pots, precise cutting points and sacred grain recipes passed down through the ages. All this is certainly important in the end product. But the truth, from Scotland to Japan, Ireland to Australia and everywhere in between, is that distillation arms you with the paint. Blending is what you do with it on the canvas.
Of course, not all painters are created equal. It’s pretty much the same in this particular style of art. Here’s a list of some of the most talented names in the whiskey blending game today, according to awards collected from the world’s top spirits competitions.
Stephanie Macleod — Director of Blending for John Dewar & Sons whiskies.

Stephanie Macleod — Director of Blending, Bacardi (John Dewar & Sons)
Macleod has overseen the operations of one of the world’s best-selling blended whiskeys since 2006, long ago cementing its status as an industry icon. During her tenure, the Dewar’s label has collected more top medals than could fit in even the largest trophy cabinet. But that’s just a small fragment of her knowledge. Six years ago she launched the Double Double series, bringing greater appreciation to the blended category among enthusiasts who had long overlooked it in favor of single malt. And she’s no slouch when it comes to that style either: the Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Royal Brackla and Craigellachie brands have all benefited from significant upgrades in the past decade. In 2019, she was duly rewarded for her efforts at the International Whiskey Competition, where she earned the title of ‘Master Blender of the Year’. She would go on to win the same award the next five years in a row; an unprecedented achievement.
Dr. Rachel Barrie, master blender for The GlenDronach, Benriach and Glenglassaugh
Brown Forman
Dr. Rachel Barrie – Master Blender, The GlenDronach, Benriach and Glenglassaugh Scotch whiskies
The esteemed physician has been a member of the Whiskey Hall of Fame since 2019 and has more than 30 years of experience in whiskey. It is estimated that she sampled nearly 200,000 barrels of liquid in that time. In 2020, The Glendronach 15 – which she assembles from a stock of single malt matured exclusively in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks – was named Best In Show at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In total, the three brands she oversees have won more than twenty gold medals from that prestigious annual jury, including last year’s Best Single Malt Scotch award for 21-year-old Glendronach. For her contributions to the profession, she has an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Edinburgh.
Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Dr. Emma Walker
Diageo
Dr. Emma Walker – Master Blender, Johnnie Walker
Long before she became the first female master blender for the world’s best-selling whiskey brand, Emma Walker was earning accolades as a healthcare scientist. She applies that same level of meticulous care and fearless craftsmanship to her whiskey duties. Over the past four years, the label has won gold at the 2022 World Whiskies Awards (for Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old), the top prize at the 2023 Trophy Spirits Show for Blue Label and double gold for Johnnie Walker 18 Year Old at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. With a last name that makes the work seem like a birthright (although there is no relationship), she has worked diligently to increase the success and mystique that the label has in the has built up a 205-year history. Most recently, this included the opening of the Johnnie Walker Vault program, a luxury platform where die-hard – and entrenched – fans can interact directly with Dr. Walker can work together to create their own custom blends.
Dr. Bill Lumsden, director of distillation, whiskey creation and whiskey stocks for Glenmorangie and Ardbeg distilleries.
LVMH
Dr. Bill Lumsden — Head of Distilling & Whiskey Creation, The Glenmorangie and Ardbeg
Dr. Bill, one of the most prominent figures in Scotch whisky, as he is affectionately known, first joined Glenmorangie in 1995. He has been head of distillation and whiskey creation for both Highland Distillery and Ardbeg on Islay for over 25 years. It is no exaggeration to suggest that his work with these liquids has helped change the image of single malt as a luxury good in the 21st century. In 2016, the roasted malt-based Signet expression he created for Glenmorangie was named “Whisky of the Year” at the International Whiskey Competition. At Ardbeg he has shown that he is able to gain a lot of appreciation by working with extra age or younger strains: Both the 5-year-old Wee Beastie and the distillery’s 25-year-old single malt won “Best In Show” at the New York World Spirits Competition. After being named ‘Master Blender of the Year’ at the International Spirits Challenge in 2015 and 2018, he became the first person to ever win the coveted honor twice. Earlier this year he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to the Scotch whiskey industry.
Suntory Spirits’ Head Blender, Shinji Fukuyo
House of Suntory
Shinji Fukuyo – Master Blender, House of Suntory
The 2024 “Master Blender of the Year” at the International Spirits Challenge has been working with Japan’s leading whiskey house for more than 40 years. His impact on the industry is immeasurable. In 2009, he was appointed Chief Blender, only the 5th in Suntory’s 102-year history. Since then, he has presided over perhaps the most meteoric rise of any category ever seen in the spirit world. It all blew up with a huge bang after the 2013 Yamazaki Sherry Cask dethroned its Scottish rivals and was named the best in the world according to the 2014 publication. Whiskey Bible. In addition to the Yamazaki Distillery, Shinji’s role will put him in charge of the Hakashu Distillery, along with the Hibiki label, now considered one of the best blended whiskeys on the shelves. Hakashu 25 Year Old won the title of World’s Best Whiskey at the 2018 and 2020 World Whiskeys Awards. Hibiki also did well at that competition; both the 21 and 30 year old expressions have alternately been named ‘World’s Best Blended Whiskey’. In 2021, Drinks International called Yamazaki the most admired distillery in the world. And earlier this year, at the International Spirits Challenge 2025, his Yamazaki 18 Year Old was named Supreme Champion Spirit, the highest honor in the entire league.
Four Roses Master Distiller Brent Elliott
Four Roses Bourbon
Brent Elliot – Master Distiller, Four Roses Distillery
Although his official title is “master distiller,” Elliott acts much more like a blender through his day-to-day duties. That’s because Four Roses barrels a total of ten different bourbon recipes – a permutation of two different mashbills against five proprietary yeast strains. His job is to oversee these unique liquids so he can offer small batches with greater complexity and precise nuance. Of course, he must also use keen sensory observation to ensure he achieves consistency where and when he wants. He relies on a background in chemistry to realize his art with scientific accuracy. The same year he took over the lead role at the respected Kentucky distillery, Four Roses was named the American Whiskey Distillery of the Year at the 2015 Icons of Whiskey Awards. A year later he won Overall Best Bourbon at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2019 it was the gold medal for taste at the World Whiskeys Awards for Small Batch, winning the honor again in 2024 at the same competition.
Michter’s Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson
Chatham Imports
Andrea Wilson – Master of Maturation, Michter’s Whiskey
Wilson took on her current role at Michter’s just over a decade ago and in the meantime the brand has risen to become one of the most acclaimed American whiskeys ever. It’s not an exaggeration. In fact the distillery is named “World Most Admired Whiskey” by Drinks International for three years in a row – an unprecedented achievement. The elevated status of the top-shelf offerings, including robust yet balanced 20- and 25-year-old bourbons, and the shimmering elegance of Celebration Sour Mash have helped amplify the halo effect. Wilson’s expertise is critical: she not only cherishes these liquids in the barrel, thereby avoiding the potential pitfalls inherent in extra-aged American whiskey; she also has the final say and designs the demanding blends that make up these famous bottlings.
Founder and master blender of Craft Irish Whiskey, Jay Bradley.
Craft Irish Whiskey Company
Jay Bradley – Founder, Master Blender, Craft Irish Whiskey Company
When Bradley first launched Craft Irish Whiskey Company in 2018, he created differentiation in a crowded category by focusing on micro-blending and finishing, with an almost obsessive level of detail; from wood origin to molecular test panels. Formerly an award-winning chef, Bradley treats blending as haute couture. This means limited runs, hand-selected barrels and curated sensory experiences that wouldn’t look out of place alongside Michelin-starred cuisine. In 2022, he took home the award for “World’s Best Irish Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards for The Devil’s Keep, the first time ever an inaugural release took the industry’s top honor. In the years since, he has built up one of the most impressive competition records in modern whisky: his whiskeys have earned gold medals no fewer than 38 times at 59 international taste awards. That’s the highest honor for almost 2/3rds of the total number of expressions he’s ever entered.
