The Toyota Tacoma is still the most popular truck in its class, and that’s not even close

As 2025 draws to a close, there’s one midsize truck that continues to outpace the rest in the United States: the Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma is on pace to have its best sales year in a decade, and a look at its sales results proves that American buyers still prefer the Japanese truck over the domestic competition.

In the third quarter of this year, Toyota sold 204,464 Tacomas, a 61.2 percent increase from 2024. Toyota did launch the fourth-generation Tacoma for 2024, which is likely why the 2025 numbers look so much better, but the truck’s popularity is undeniable. Sales of the truck are likely to surpass 257,000 units sold in 2021.

Despite Tacoma’s commendable competitive lead, sales of nearly all other midsize trucks rose in the third quarter. The second best-selling midsize truck was the Chevrolet Colorado, which had not even reached 100,000 units sold at the end of September, with sales of 77,390 trucks.

There’s also a big gap between the Chevy and the third-place Ford Ranger, which sold 48,278 pickups in the first nine months of the year. Sales rose 57.4 percent, barely exceeding the Nissan Frontier, of which 47,630 were sold. It is the only truck that recorded fewer sales this year than last year, with sales down 12.2 percent.

The Jeep Gladiator was the fifth best-selling midsize car this year, with 38,513 sales, an increase of 18.0 percent. The GMC Canyon ended the third quarter in last place, but a rising tide lifts all boats, and the brand sold 27,878 trucks so far this year, up 3.4 percent.

Competition will soon heat up when Ram launches its midsize offering, and there’s a mountain to climb if the automaker thinks it can dethrone the iconic Toyota.
