Manchester United are on the verge of a major injury blow just in time for the business end of the Premier League season.
It is understood that INEOS has set qualification for the Champions League as one of the objectives for the season.
And to achieve that, Michael Carrick needs all hands on deck, given how thin the squad is. The acting head coach is already without Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Patrick Dorgu.
It was recently passed on by The People’s Person that Harry Maguire has returned to training after an injury following the match against West Ham.
Matthijs de Ligt long-term injury
Now fellow defender Matthijs de Ligt will also return to action next month, according to the defender The sun. That actually means that he will play against Crystal Palace on March 1.
The Dutchman has been out of action since December. He was initially expected to be out for a short time, but ended up being sidelined for more than two months.
The Red Devils were dealing with a recurring back injury and decided not to take any chances and not rush him back.
It has been a difficult period for the Dutch international, whose chances of making the Dutch World Cup squad are also at stake.
Return timeline set
However, The sun have claimed the 26-year-old has remained positive and continued his recovery in Carrington, while avoiding the need to go under the knife.
“MANCHESTER UNITED defender Matthijs de Ligt has maintained a positive outlook during his three-month layoff due to injury.
“De Ligt has set his sights on a return to action next month, hoping to boost Michael Carrick’s decisive move to secure the Champions League next season.
“SunSport understands that De Ligt suffered a minor setback last month, just when he seemed to be getting closer to a return.
Great timing for Carrick
“Although his return has stalled, the Netherlands international has managed to avoid surgery and continues his rehabilitation with club medics in Carrington.
“Well-placed sources have suggested that De Ligt has not pressed the panic button, even though his long-term injury could jeopardize his place at the World Cup this summer.”
Before his untimely injury, Matthijs de Ligt was one of the standouts under Ruben Amorim. Hopefully he can continue in the same vein under Carrick.
