Detroit – Sean Manaea had an apologetic tone on his voice on Monday afternoon while rating his season.
“I have high expectations of myself and this organization does it,” said Manaea after the 10-8 victory of the Mets on the Tigers in Comerica Park. “Everyone pulls their weight, everyone does their thing and I am not. It is just very frustrating. I wish I had an answer to it, but I will not. I will find out.”
On this day, the left-handed one lasted only 3 ²/₃ innings and he handed over five earned points to eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk to become the latest Mets-starter that became ineffective.
Kodai Senga flopped a day earlier, after the rough outing of David Peterson on Saturday against the Marlins.
For Manaea, who owns an ERA of 5.60, it has been three straight starts without completing five innings, so that the extra stress was placed on the bullpen.
He only needed one throw on Monday to find out, while Jahmai Jones went deep with the lead for the Tigers.
Manaea handed over a two-run Homer to WenCeel Pérez in the third.
“At the moment the biggest thing for Sean is that he will not raise the Fastball,” said Carlos Mendoza manager. “So he is hit with it and he is unable to use and wipe the change as he wants. But it starts with him who raises Fastball – which made him effective last year.”
Mendoza indicated that Team Brass is focused on doing Manaea well – not removing him from the rotation.
It is a similar approach with Senga.
“They are part of the rotation,” said Mendoza. “So our job is trying to find a way to help and that is what we will do.”
The ugly afternoon of Manaaea was closed in the fourth, after he had allowed an RBI triple to Zach McKinstry and Jones brought in another run with a single.
Gregory Soto was needed to get the final in the inning.
Until Manaea can again raise his fastball, success will be a challenge for him.
“It’s a large part of my game,” he said. “I get a lot of swings there and miss there, and when it is a few centimeters underneath, it is touched or I just don’t put anything else on it.
“I feel that I am doing the right things, but it doesn’t work now.”
