The shortest reign in Premier League history

The shortest reign in Premier League history

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as manager of Nottingham Forest, just over a month after being appointed Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor.

Postecoglou has failed to win any of his eight matches in all competitions. He lost six, with a 3–0 home defeat to Chelsea ending his short tenure.

It was Forest’s third consecutive Premier League defeat without scoring a goal. Forest, who secured European qualification last season, are 17th in the table and just one point above the relegation places.

The Australian now holds the record for the shortest reign in Premier League history, measured in days in charge.

Postecoglou was appointed to the City Ground on September 9 and remained in the role for just 39 days. He eclipses the record of former Charlton Athletic manager Les Reed, who was in charge of The Valley for just 40 days in 2006.

Postecoglou’s four league games in charge also equal the record for the shortest reign per game by a permanent Premier League manager.

Frank de Boer also oversaw just four games during an ill-fated spell at Crystal Palace. The Dutchman was sacked after Palace opened the 2017/18 season with four consecutive scoreless defeats.

  1. Ange Postecoglou – Nottingham Forest (39 days)
  2. Les Reed – Charlton Athletic (40 days)
  3. René Meulensteen – Fulham (75 days)
  4. Frank de Boer – Crystal Palace (77 days)
  5. Bob Bradley – Swansea City (84 days)
  6. Quique Sánchez Flores – Watford (85 days)
  7. Nathan Jones – Southampton (94 days)
