Nottingham Forest sacks Postecoglou after loss at Chelsea

Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou following the club’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground.

The Australian has been sacked after just over a month in charge after failing to win any of his eight matches. The decision comes after a disappointing defeat to Chelsea at home, leaving Forest hovering precariously above the relegation places in the Premier League.

Forest arguably had a goalless first half as Postecoglou’s midfield dominated against a Chelsea side left without any major names. However, the home team collapsed after the break and conceded twice in quick succession, giving Chelsea an unassailable lead.

Improved by a three-way substitution at half-time, Chelsea took control. Four minutes after the restart, Josh Acheampong opened the scoring with his first goal for Chelsea, as the 19-year-old met Pedro Neto’s cross and headed home.

Just three minutes later the lead was doubled. Neto’s free kick found a route past Matz Sels, who will have been disappointed as he could not keep out the attempt.

Forest looked for a route back to the match but could not find a way past the Chelsea resistance. Neco Williams fired a glorious chance over the bar, while substitute Igor Jesus smashed a header against the woodwork.

Chelsea sealed the victory after 82 minutes, when Reece James burst in after Sels had messed up a set-piece delivery. Malo Gusto’s unnecessary red card was a blemish for the Blues, but it is Forest who are under real pressure.

Postecoglou was only appointed 39 days ago, but failed to win in eight games. Forest have lost their last three Premier League games without scoring a single goal.
