The American aviation juggernaut Boeing has been a hot topic lately, although perhaps not for the best reasons. A few deadly 737 Max crashes in just five months over 2018 and 2019 that has an effect. Not to mention the infamous 2024 flight from Alaska Airlines, where a plug of the output door has shifted itself due to missing bolts. And now the newest narrow-body products from Boeing, the 737 Max 7 and Max 10 are struggling to be certified for use by the US Federal Aviation Administration. That forces some customers such as United Airlines to switch their orders to older 737 MAX models instead.

However, before the recent MAX literations became a thorn in the side of Boeing, the 737 was generally considered a sustainable, reliable workshop for commercial airlines. Since it first rang the air in 1967, Boeing has delivered 12,134 of the popular jets from June 2025. That makes the 737 the most sold commercial jet ever, although Airbus’s A320 family could steal that title in the very near future, even with the mysterious Barking of A320.

Based on our research, none of the very first Boeing 737 Airframes from the late 1960s is still in the regular passenger performance of commercial services. The Venezuelan airline Venezolana, however, still has tail number YV3471 on regularly planned domestic routes. That 737-200 was built in 1978, making it more than 45 years old.

It was almost lost forever

The most vintage Boeing 737 in Venezolana started to fly life for Frontier Airlines, which is striking because the boundary we know today has an all-airbus fleet. However, the original frontier Airlines presented bankruptcy and were absorbed by Continental Airlines in 1986. The current frontier airlines that, like so many, charge costs for just about everything, except the use of the toilet (we should not give them ideas) was formed in 1994 and is related to the original airline in name.

In 1985, just before the original border kept existing, it sold the 737 to United Airlines, which flew from the outfit until 2001. At that time it seemed the end of the line for the venerable Jet, which is old enough to date from the characteristic flat-bottom motorcycle hurts that were designed to accommodate larger Turobofans in the 1980s. The plane was kept in the desert of California for ten years before Venezolana brought the saving of darkness and the weather employed.

According to a 2024 YouTube Video by Noel Philips, an aviation fan that traveled on the Jet, definitely starts to show his age, with visible wear on the seats, windows and overhead lights and air openings. Although the interior can easily be renewed, a lack of spare parts could spell the end of this survivor earlier.

The 737-200 can land in gravel

From May 2024, the three largest American airlines American, Delta and United fleets with average ages had between 13.4 and 16.3 years. According to those standards, Venezolana’s Vintage Boeing is 737 old. It was the 512th of his type to be produced, and remarkably enough there are older 737 Airframes that are still in use. But they are in charter or loading rolls, which are not technically not regularly planned for commercial flights.

In particular, 13 of the world’s 30 oldest jets are their trade in our neighbor in the north, Canada, and some are as old than 52 years. Air Inuit is an important charter operator of the Vintage Boeing 727-200, especially because it is well suited to land on non-improved gravel courts in remote Canadian villages. Unlike other jet aircraft, the older 737 can be equipped with a special “gravel kit” to protect critical components against flying rocks. Three from Air Inuit’s Jets are distributed internally to hold both passengers and cargo.

Just like Air Inuit, Canada’s Nolinor Aviation operates nine of the aging, fuel-thirsty 737-200 jets, which means they are sent to external mining activities. Although the company acknowledges that propeller-driven aircraft are also an option, they are much slower than the Boeing-Jets. Getting in a jet plane that is older than you might make a number of passengers nervous again, but that also applies to the latest whizz-bang 737 Max.
