The Nissan Serena facelift has made its debut for the Japanese market, four years after the C28 generation people-mover appeared. The pre-facelift C28 was previewed in Malaysia earlier this month, ahead of its launch in the Malaysian market, scheduled for the first quarter of next year.

The revised MPV differs from the previous iteration with the front end now sporting V-shaped patterns instead of the horizontal lines of the pre-facelift, with a corresponding reorientation of the LED daytime running lights. Elsewhere, the facelifted model features a new alloy wheel design.

Two powertrain variants are offered in Japan, consisting of the MR20DD 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, similar to the 150 PS/200 Nm in the pre-facelift, and the HR14DDe e-Power 1.4-litre naturally aspirated inline-three petrol engine that acts as a generator for the 163 PS/315 Nm drive motor (with a second motor on the rear axle for AWD variants).

In response to owner feedback, the C28 Serena facelift now gets a memory function for e-Pedal mode selection (single pedal driving), allowing drivers to retain their preferred e-Pedal operating mode for the next time the vehicle is started.

The C28 Serena facelift will be sold in Japan in X, Highway Star V and Luxion equipment variants, with the latter reserved for e-Power variants. The Highway Star V and Luxion variants get a new look on the outside, with the latter also getting new interior trim exclusive to the variant.

In Japan, the facelifted model can also be specified with the Autech Line package, which brings a different design of 16-inch alloy wheels, a dark chrome grille finish, exterior mirrors with a metallic finish, a new ‘bespoke’ seat material and an Autech Line badge.

Inside, the C28 Serena facelift continues to offer seven- and eight-seat cabin layouts depending on variant, and these are now complemented by the four- or five-seat Multi Box variant that replaces the third-row seats with a ‘high capacity storage box’ that can also double as a bench or table.

The Multi Box is so named because the additional compartments can be accessed from the top and sides, while an internal divider provides layout options. When the second row of seats is folded down, the cargo area can serve as a bed, with a mat of water-resistant Cordura.

For infotainment, the C28 Serena facelift brings the NissanConnect system with support for Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play, and includes an alert function that alerts the driver via smartphone if he has forgotten to lock the car, close the windows or if the hazard lights are left on.

For added safety, the C28 Serena facelift also adds a rear seat reminder to remind the driver to check the cabin for passengers or luggage.

The C28-generation Nissan Serena facelift will go on sale in Japan in February, starting from 2,785,200 yen (RM72,990). In Malaysia earlier this month, the C28 Serena was shown in its pre-facelift guise, which will be launched in the market in the first quarter of next year.
