India have taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the five-match series, with the visiting side struggling to find rhythm against an ultra-aggressive Indian batting line-up. Despite the outcome, Oram emphasized that there are bigger goals at stake as the Mitchell Santner-led team prepares for the ensuing match. T20 World Cupfrom February 7.
“The easy answer is that we win these two matches (4th and 5th T20Is) and that would be nice for the overall team confidence. I said earlier about guys coming back from problems and injury layoffs, guys finding their own individual confidence, but winning games is nice,” Oram said at the pre-match press conference.
Oram was clear that the results in this bilateral series should not be considered a disappointment; Rather, the team should focus on resolving issues before the start of the world event.
“It would be cool to sing our winning team song after a good win against a good side, but at the same time you have to look a little deeper than wins and losses. And that’s not downplaying the results here, but we have to make sure that we also look at the longer term and the bigger picture. And historically, New Zealand has peaked well at the ICC events,” Oram added.
Remaining calm is the solution for the Indian attack: Oram
When asked how the team is coping with the constant pressure against ultra-aggressive batting units like India‘s, Oram returned to what he believes is a Kiwi strength.
“I think we have the ability to remain calm amid the storm that is going on at the moment… We are not going too high or too low and we know that we are not playing as well as we can. At the same time, we know that this Indian team is so good. So we have to make sure that we keep an eye on the longer term,” he concluded.
The fourth T20I between India and New Zealand is scheduled for January 28 and will be played in the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The series will conclude with the fifth and final T20I in Thiruvananthapuram on January 30.
