Harley finally found his new CEO after Cool Guy Motorcycle Man Jochen Zeitz decided to return to April, and he is a real cruncher of Dweeb number. Unfortunately I didn’t get the job. The bar-and-shield brand decided to go a different direction and Rent a man named Artie StarrsCurrent CEO of Topgolf and former global CEO of Pizza Hut. Zeitz remains as a senior advisor and helps Starrs (who starts in October) to speed until speed until February. At Topgolf, Starrs helped to grow the brand to more than 100 of the locations of the Bowling-Alley-for-Golfers, growing business income with more than 50% in just four years and expanding the brand to European and Asian markets. Starrs studied economics at Princeton and started his career as an investment banker.
“It is a huge privilege to join Harley-Davidson as president and CEO, and I am grateful for the possibility to help this incredible company,” Starrs said in a statement. “I have long admired the unique position that Harley-Davidson has in the hearts of his riders and fans; there is no brand that brings the same level of community and rebellious spirit as Harley-Davidson.”
Starrs calls himself an avid sports and outdoor enthusiast who likes to walk, play golf, see live music and spend time with his family. You may notice that none of those stated things include on a motorcycle. It does not seem that Starrs has some connection with the motorcycle world, and if he has an approval, it has not mentioned. Is it good to accept the most popular motorcycle brand in the US without really knowing the market? Perhaps an outsider can view Harley’s growth needs with a clearer vision.
Suckers get the job done
“I am enthusiastic about the enormous potential to both stimulate growth and to further improve the HD experience for everyone, and I am looking forward to working together with the dedicated employees of Harley-Davidson and dealer network while we start this trip together,” said Starrs.
The sale of motorcycle was about 15%across the board in 2024 and Harley was in a terrible street with a huge fall in sales throughout Europe and Asia, because consumers withdraw to non-essential purchases in an uncertain economy. In recent years, HD has struggled with younger riders, despite the “Hardwire” plan from Zeitz focused on brand information, partly because the entry models of the brand are still considerably more expensive than the rest of the market.
Starrs is taking a tough market with Harley. The company is confronted with a difficult international market with the current trade war that has started from President Donald Trump. Solid rates for steel and aluminum damage Harley’s bottom line, while the unrest in the trade further reduces consumer and investor beliefs in the economic system. Bicycles are down, and especially expensive bicycles. It will be a difficult row to hoe, but this is the right moment for Harley to hire a figures to run the company instead of an enthusiastic lifelong driver. Without prejudices about what Harley should be, he might be the right man to assemble a change in front of the brand. Harley has already announced a good sustainable sprint model that will come next year and recently sold a non-checking interest in his successful financial arm to avert part of his debt, so perhaps this is the start of a new day for the black and orange.
