Komisarek was not flashy – from it – but you felt better knowing that he was on the ice. He blocked shots as if it were his task (because, well, it was it), and he made every centimeter earn in the corners. For a while he was exactly what Montreal needed. Then came the summer of 2009 – and everything changed.

Komisarek is made for Montreal

Komisarek entered the competition with some buzz. He was one Seventh-Overal Pick in 2001Fresh from Michigan, with a bruising style that seemed tailor -made for the NHL of that time. By the time he had settled in a full-time role in the Canadiens, he logged in big minutes, completed every check and gave the Habs joy something to cheer-even if it did not appear on the score sheet.

Komisarek’s partnership with Andrei Markov worked like a charm. Markov was the Puck moving, the attacking spirit. Komisarek was the Hamer at home. It was old-school hockey in the best way. And in 2009 he was rewarded with an All-Star Knik-A big problem, especially in a city like Montreal where that type of recognition still produces weight.

Then called the number of Komisarek’s number

That same summer Komisarek hit free desk. Toronto – in the middle of another rebuilding – needs muscle on the blue line. In July 2009, the then Map Leafs General Manager (GM) Brian Burke made a splash and signed him to one Five -year -old deal of $ 22.5 million. At the time, that was serious money for a D-Man who is staying at home.

It made sense on paper. Similar to what the current Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is currently trying to do, Burke tried to change the DNA of the team at the time – although it was subsequently referred to as ‘grit’. Komisarek brought the edge that Burke wanted. He was tough, reliable and tested by the battle.

But the game is not played on paper. Komisarek’s first season in Toronto was demolished by a shoulder injury in just 34 games. After that it never really came together. The competition changed quickly. The speed was inside, the space was sleek and Komisarek’s physical, grinding-out-out style suddenly became a step too slow. He always seemed to be behind the piece.

In Montreal Komisarek was the man you had behind. In Toronto he was the man with the $ 4.5 million cap -hit pursued the back of the opposition. He couldn’t keep up. That kind of shift – especially in a market like Toronto – can quickly increase the temperature. And it did.

Komisarek tried, but he never got his game back

Komisarek kept hanging around for a few more seasons with the Maple Leafs, but it never clicked completely. By 2013, the team bought out the last year of his contract. He was only 31, but writing was on the wall.

He gave it again with the Carolina Hurricanes for a one-year-old deal-a quieter stop. However, Komisarek’s NHL days were done. For 11 seasons, Komisarek played 551 games, placed 14 goals, 67 assists and just shy of 700 penalty minutes. These are far from striking figures. But given his game that was never the point.

What went wrong for Komisarek? Or was it?

When a controversial signing goes sideways, there is always a debate. Was it the player? The team? The timing? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The game of Komisarek was logical in the early to the mid -2000s. But the NHL shifted under his skates – Quicker transitions, mobile defenders, fewer scrums, more stretch passes.

Toronto did not get the Komisarek where they thought they paid. Instead, they received a player between two eras. And if you play on a Canadian market like Toronto? Those spotlights can become a magnifying glass. One year you are an All-Star, it is the next time you are a warning story.

The Komisarek story is more

It is easy to cook it all and Komisarek to call a free-agent miss. But if that is all that you remember, you miss the whole photo. He played a key role in Montreal in a time when the team needed pushback and grit. He did not take his game or occurred as something he was not.

Komisarek gave what he had – and for a solid piece, that was more than enough. In a competition that moves quickly and forgets faster, Komisarek’s story is a memory. Players cannot always choose how they are remembered.

But those who have left it all on the ice? They are worth remembering. Komisarek is one of those players.
