Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
TL; DR
- One country has introduced new rules that dramatically limit how long non-skippable video ads can run on platforms like YouTube.
- The measure targets long, forced ads and also bans delays in closing static ads.
- While ad creators on the platform are funded, the regulation aims to curb practices that many users feel seriously harm the viewing experience.
It’s safe to say that unskippable ads on YouTube are only getting longer and becoming extremely annoying. Of course, you can always pay for YouTube Premium eliminate ads or use alternatives like the Morphe app, but the truth is those options are not for everyone. No one can really stop YouTube from showing more ads on the platform or increasing the length of unskippable commercials, which are currently up to 30 seconds. However, one country is now fighting back, not with public opinion, but with actual laws.

Vietnam is reportedly limiting unskippable ads to five seconds on YouTube and other online platforms. This means that all video or animated ads can be skipped after five seconds. Vietnam news reports that these new rules will come into effect in the country from February 15. Furthermore, the new regulations also ban platforms from forcing people to wait before closing static ads.
Should governments step in to restrict unskippable ads on YouTube?

Clearly, many YouTube users welcome this regulatory intervention. Comments on Reddit shows that this is something that users will also want to implement in their own country. Even as platforms like YouTube respond by increasing the number of skippable ads, this move still sends an important message that the current advertising experience has gone largely unchecked for too long. Currently, viewers have little control over how many ads they see or how long those ads last unless they pay for a subscription.
To be fair, advertising makes YouTube free to use and directly funds the creators that people come to the platform to watch. Advertising is an essential part of the ecosystem. The problem, however, is that YouTube’s growing reliance on long, unskippable ads is becoming increasingly excessive. When pushed too aggressively, these ads not only interrupt videos but also seriously degrade the viewing experience. So this intervention isn’t about removing ads altogether, but about curbing practices that have started to prioritize monetization at the expense of user satisfaction.
