Returned to the capital thanks to an intervention carried out by the special super intention of Rome and financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the facade of the Church of Saints Nereo and Achilleo is returned to the audience that returns to Dialogue, with the geometric decorative score of the building, with Vialle TermaCalla.
Access to vogue around the mid -sixteenth century, the scratch technique was used for the buildings
And not for holy places. For this reason, it must be considered unique, although the choice of graffiti was probably due to the short available time and the poor financial resources that do not allow to create a travertine façade. For the decorations, this technique includes the use of a double layer of plaster, the first deepest and generally dark color and a second, thin and light color, which was removed in accordance with the depicted image until it comes forward, by drawing, the underlying plaster.
“The presentation of this restoration during the Jubilee year is a great result – explains Daniela Porro, special chief inspector of Rome – because this small church is very old, but owes its appearance to the Jubilees of 1475 and, in particular for the facade, of 1600. A result made by the National Recovery and Re -plan.”
The intervention, directed by the restorer Eleonora Leprini, coordinated by Maria Cristina Lapenna and executed by the L’Afficina Consortium, made it possible to make important songs of the decoration visible, precisely performed with the scratch technique, and the return of a correct reading of the scores. The works were preceded and accompanied by a search for archive sources operated by a guide for the duration of the intervention and subject to continuous findings on the spot.
“With this restoration, the façade lost the void and confusion that the characterized – notes Eleonora Leprini restorer of the Superintendency on – and found the lightness of a proposed decoration: observing the orders on top and the somewhat marked surface, the geometric backgrounds and the geometric backgrounds and the geometric backgrounds and the geometric backgrounds and the geometrics.”
