Formula 1 teams do not jump from Backmarker to Koploper at night, an absurd principle that was one of the criticism of the plot of F1: the film. Nevertheless, the release coincided with Sauber’s Real-World transformation from Backmarker in the first eight events of 2025 in the competition. The third place of Nico Hulkenberg in the British Grand Prix may have been a smaller ‘victory’ than Hollywood -requirements, and there is no existential threat to the team to control the drama, but even without the cinematic greatness it is a remarkable story.
Each epic requires a background story and Sauber has that, albeit a complicated one. Formed in 1970 to build and run Hillclimb machines that campaigned by founder Peter Sauber, made the long journey to F1 in 1993 through success with Mercedes in sports cars. Sauber’s F1 -Opstueren was intended as a completely working team, only to do it alone when Mercedes withdrew. Mercedes finally made in touch with McLaren, in which he initially took the Ilmor/Mercedes engines Sauber, was initially that the start was of a recurring narrative thread of the manufacturer’s dreams.
Sauber built a reputation as a pragmatically running midfield operation before BMW bought it, while the manufacturer’s chances were right. After being executed as BMW Sauber of 2006-2009, BMW pulled out the plug thanks to a combination of the worldwide financial crisis and the malaise in results. Peter Sauber, who retained an interest during this period, saved the team, but the times were difficult to staggered at the point at which Sauber was on the edge of financial oblivion before he was purchased by the Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing. After he arrived near the sale of Michael Andretti in 2021, Audi started his takeover of the team, then in the fourth of five seasons under the name Alfa Romeo thanks to a sponsorship agreement, in 2022. Next year the name changes, Audi’s new power unit will be fulfilled and the German Works Team Dream will be.
That provides enormous expectations, something that Sauber has been doing well for the past two years. It never got as bad as it did for fictional team APX GP, which was without a point in two and a half seasons at the start of F1: the film, but Sauber was not far away. From mid -2022 to the end of 2024 it only scraped 24 points in 59 races. This brings us to the real start of the story: Sauber’s terrible start until 2025.
The hope was higher after an increase in form late in ’24, but testing for the season in Bahrain was a nightmare. The car had to be set up stiffly, was difficult to drive, unpredictable and slow. The worst of all was that it did not behave as the simulation tools said it should be. At least an upgrade had been introduced for the Australian Grand Prix consisting of a new front wing, floor and bodywork, which represented the ‘Real’ 2025 Sauber. This improved the car, but only from one that was completely at sea and good of the back, to one at the back, but able to scrape in Q2 if the qualification was perfectly executed, even if racing the racing was missing. That was the reality for the first eight events of 2025, with the seventh place of Hulkenberg in Australia, owed more to good pit stop -timing when the rain returned then pace. Hulkenberg referred to “struggle in traffic” and a car that “was challenging to drive”, while Gabriel Bortoleto indicated: “Even if we have pace, it is just so difficult” and called “unpredictable balance”, to choose only four comments from that series of events.
This was tackled with an upgrade that really made the car better for fighting, F1: the film style. Or rather, it now behaves better in turbulent air around cars than before. This is a problem for every F1 car, but the Sauber was particularly weak in this area early in the season. The journey from Gabriel Bortoleto to the gravel on the opening round of the Chinese Grand Prix after being caught by the aftermath of the Haas of Ollie Bearman illustrates how bad the things were. This is not Hollywood’s idea of a car that magically works brilliantly in dirty air, although that has been improved. Instead, it is a consequence of the all -round improvement of aerodynamics due to making a car that is less peak. This is about making the aerodynamic performance more robust, which means less susceptible to stalls that are the result of airflow separation or the network of interacting swirls that burst that leads to a sudden fall in the downforce.
“I call it driveability,” says Team Head Jonathan Wheatley. ‘I can remember I was sitting [on the pitwall] In Jeddah during qualifying and thinking: “The drivers just can’t choose a right brake point for turn 1”, the car was so difficult to stop and go there. I remember that I came from there in our debrief and said that the drivers simply cannot build on a consistent round time because the car is a handful in certain situations.
“What I noticed from the first upgrade was a confidence, even on the cameras on board – I still look at them to view them during the sessions, especially during qualifying. And I think that the development program was introduced [means] There is now just a confidence in the car. They can enjoy driving, it is less peaky, they can manage a racing pace over a distance because they are not worried about one axis above the other. And there is a consistency in building our qualifying pace. One of the reasons to be in Q2 [more often] This year is just a broader operational window. “
The upgrades of Sauber have made the car to the riding channel, which in turn causes more faith in the drivers. And although the improved parts will not switch to next year, the lessons that are taught on the technical side will do that. Zak Mauger/Getty images
Wheatley refers to the new floor that appeared for the ninth race of the season in Spain. Originally planned for two races earlier, this was the result of a rigorous investigation back on the Hinwil basis of Sauber in why the car had not behaved as expected from the start. This process has not only made the car more competitive, but crucial, has improved the depth and methodologies of the technical team. This underlying science can be transferable to the 2026 project, although the parts are not.
“Barcelona was the result of a lot of homework about getting a somewhat annoying surprise at the start of the season is not where we should have been,” said Key. “Us [performance] The number was theoretically quite high, and if we had reached it, we would have been where we are now or better, but we just didn’t, [meaning the initial reaction was] Something strange is going on here. So we dived very deeply and came up with new ways to develop things, new statistics to assess something. We have done a lot of measurements on the right track to try to get our heads why, if you have a number for you, actually a whole series of numbers, they do not repeat themselves. “
The Barcelona floor was the most important change. Hulkenberg turned the performance gain into a remarkable fifth place in Spain thanks to a combination of Kimi Antonelli’s pension that activated a security car, which was on fresh soft soft, so that he could pass cars faster, and the punishment of Max Verstappen. However, the fact that he was on course in ninth place on merit showed that how big was a step in delivering what Hulkenberg says that the feedback had been the entire season, namely “Make it fast, make it drive, consistent, comfortable”.
That is what really made the difference, which yields a larger performance copy than expected for Sauber. The downforce produced by the car with the Spain package was higher, but the improvement of the pace was exacerbated because the drivers can attack. Add that further repetitions of the floor introduced in Austria and Great Britain, making this what the team calls a three-headed upgrade, and you can see why Sauber has become so much stronger. Qualifying performance has been somewhat improved, but the racing poetic is considerably better, especially with high fuel taxes. This has helped the drivers to make a profit, even in races where the qualification did not go well.
“The upgrades have brought a wide spectrum of execution,” Wheatley said after the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Bortoleto finished sixth on merit. “It seems that we can follow a little closer than some other teams, but the drivers simply seem very comfortable with the car on different tire connections and over different circuits. It is very encouraging.”
The result of these improvements is a trek of 45 points, making it seventh in the Constructors’ Championship and firmly contrary to the fifth, given that Williams is only nine points ahead. It is certainly a rescue stable in that respect. He even has the young hotshot teammate, although the Bortoleto season has been impressive from the start.
Now comes the real challenge for Sauber, because this is far from the end of the story. Audi explained the objective of challenge for victories and world championships towards the end of the decade is ambitious, and recovering from a diabolical start to achieve the respectability of midfield is a decrease in the ocean compared to what needs to be done to achieve that. There is still a huge amount of recruitment, restructuring and buildings to do, but what is encouraging is that technically a breakthrough has been made. It is crucial to introduce one package that the things improves positive, but the fact that profit has been repeated with further developments is crucial. The expectations are therefore internally higher for the rules that will be reset in 2026, so that the first really clean sheet of paper was designed under the leadership leadership of Mattia Binotto, who came to the joint titles of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer last year.
This is where the real story deviates from the films. There are no shortcuts in F1 and there is still a long way to go for this team because it approaches his metamorphosis in Audi, but the improvement of the tools, the growth in know -how, is definitive evidence that progress is being made, although there was nothing to show to show it only a few months ago. It is not much in the big schedule of things, but it is a start – one perhaps, many years later, even to the perfect Hollywood one end for Sauber.
