If there’s one area where the Phoenix Suns have quietly excelled over the past 12 months, it’s filling the biggest needs on their roster in unconventional ways.
Trading for center Mark Williams is one such example, while he always had the talent, it was just unclear if he could stay healthy. Luckily, he even appears in back-to-backs these days.
The point guard rotation was another, with last season’s addition of Tyus Jones being a disaster. Either way, Phoenix now has the underrated trio of Collin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin and Jamaree Bouyea.
Suns should consider making a move for Lonzo Ball at the deadline
However, if there is an opportunity to sign a player like Lonzo Ball for next to nothing, then the Suns should seriously consider it because of the consequences it could have for them in the long run.
To be clear, Ball is currently no better or more in demand than the three floor generals they have in their rotation. He is also making $10 million this season, which is why the Cleveland Cavaliers certainly want to part ways with him as soon as possible.
Lonzo Ball is so elitist. A lot of NBA teams should draft him pic.twitter.com/YGaBMFhn0c

Trading De’Andre Hunter for Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder positions them to move under the second platform next season, and moving Ball for someone like Nick Richards (another player would have to be added to make this work) seems like the next logical step.
If you’re the Suns, your own point guard depth after this season is unclear. Gillespie could theoretically get a big deal to play elsewhere, although all indications are he wants to stay.
Bouyea hasn’t even converted his two-way contract to a standard contract yet, while Phoenix has cut ties with Goodwin in the past (they’d be crazy to do that again).
It’s also hard to see where exactly Ball would fit next to Devin Booker and Jalen Green, although the 28-year-old would clearly come off the bench at this point.
Further strengthening his case is the fact that he has proven he can shoot over 40 percent from deep a season earlier (42.3 percent over 35 games for the Chicago Bulls before being injured in 2021-2022).
Head coach Jordan Ott clearly prefers three ball handlers and creators to call on as the trio teamed up for 61 minutes in the recent loss to the LA Clippers.
Yes, the Suns were behind both Booker and Green before that, but even if this roster is fully healthy, they’ll all get a look.
This is an imperfect solution to a problem that doesn’t even exist in The Valley yet. But if they can get Ball for next to nothing ahead of a summer where any of their three current guards could leave, then they need to be proactive. Just not as proactive.
