The Philadelphia 76ers could technically dream as big as trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the intense competition they face in that event could take them out of the bidding war before it even begins.
The Giannis rumor mill dominated headlines early in the offseason, but slowly became a moot front. As the offseason progressed, it became clear that he would remain in Milwaukee for the time being, as it was impractical for him and his ball club to seriously consider a trade from the only franchise he has ever known.
However, a recent report seemed to indicate that the Greek Freak any interest filed while playing for the Knicks in New York, though the latter was characterized for not seriously pursuing a blockbuster deal that would have given them the two-time Most Valuable Player to team with All-Star guard Jalen Brunson.
But at least that points to one thing: that the Bucks are starting to realize they are at the mercy of their superstar. Giannis seems content in Milwaukee for now, but he specifically said he’s not closing any doors. A trade sooner or later is also in the cards, especially if the Bucks falter this season due to their poor personnel.
The 76ers face stiff competition if they look to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo
The 76ers have not shown any serious interest in trading for Giannis, but they are one of the few teams that could make an offer if push comes to shove. But even if they decide they want to chase the superstar, they’ll have stiff competition in that regard.
In fact, former NBA analyst Bill Simmons seems to believe that a team like the Spurs could win a hypothetical bidding war for Antetokounmpo. It’s true that San Antonio has the necessary package of draft capital and young players to entice Milwaukee, and they don’t have a poison pill or unfavorable contracts on their side.
In addition to San Antonio, Oklahoma City also has what it takes to make a serious bid for the Greek Freak. The Thunder still have the most robust collection of draft picks, and their litanay of young talent can’t be ignored either.
Simply put, the 76ers will have to put their best foot forward if they want to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But even if that were the case, it may ultimately no longer matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s so hard to get rid of it.
