Most NBA fans and experts expect that the Detroit pistons will improve their surprisingly effective season 2024-2025, in which they won 44 races and achieved the play-offs.
In many ways, the arguments for this make a backup of those expectations.
Jaden Ivey, perhaps the second best attacking player in the team, was limited to 30 games last season. If his health persists, his presence should improve the violation of Detroit.
Then there are the general internal improvements that can be honestly expected, with jalen, Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland probably all take a step forward.
One important element, however, remains in a state of Flux, and that is the floor distance of Detroit.
Duncan Robinson, and who else?
Despite the acquisition of the services of Duncan Robinson, one of the purest shooters in the competition, the pistons do not seek precisely from three -point shooters, and will have to hope that Gift Cunningham and his teammates take a collective step forward.
The All-Star made 35.6% of its six night attempts last year. That is approximately the average efficiency of the competition in the middle volume. It can be worse, but it is not an outright power of Cunningham, nor an assets on the field for the pistons.
Thompson (22.4%) and Holland (23.8%) are both levels below the competition average, what questions about how the two can eventually play side by side, unless one, or both, someone who becomes defenses, should pay attention.
The aforementioned Ivey, who broke into 40.9% of his three-balls last season, missed 52 games and so we have no idea if that can be duplicated.
So far, it is a complete non-factor in the distance department, and the curious decision to run Isaiah Stewart from the three-point line, does not help the situation, even if he has made a remarkable improvement in his border efficiency.
How to repair it
There is no answer, but the umbrella plan now seems to be due to the hope of internal improvements, both individually and collective.
Detroit will have to play on line-ups, with Robinson off the floor, in which most players look at the efficiency of sub-37%, and teams are very aware of this.
Shall we see opponents playing a lot of zone against the pistons, hoping to remove Cunningham and Ivey’s sloping bumps, and forcing Detroit in more outdoor dismissals?
For the pistons, who almost seem to be in a play -off place this season, they may find a way to overcome the lack of optimization in the field of floor distance and to meet the expectations to make the post -season – but that does not mean that they can overcome the same opportunities when the game slows down and explore the same opponent.
This is all to be said that Detroit must be active in the trade market if they enter 2026 with the under average efficiency of three points. The team only made 32.4% of those shots against the New York Knicks in the first round, and if they want to continue this season, that shot will be a crucial element of the recipe.
