The brand’s third EV promises a range of 400 miles

The brand’s third EV promises a range of 400 miles

Like many other automakers, Volvo has pushed its way into what seemed like a promising U.S. market for battery-electric vehicles a few years ago. Despite fits and starts, the compact EX30 crossover and larger three-row EX90 are now on sale, with 4,970 EX30s and 3,299 EX90s sold through November 2025.

But the Swedes are not giving up on EVs. Instead, they’re about to unveil a third production model in a few weeks, and today we can share a few teaser images of the EX60, which falls between the EX30 And EX90.

Volvo will launch five models in 2025, EX60 in 2026

Huge things are happening at this luxury Swedish carmaker.

Can that second row fold back?

The EX60 is billed as a five-seater with two rows, and a teaser image shows a generous storage bin behind the second row at the bottom of the tailgate, which may look big enough for the second row to fold back and store in the floor, like in a minivan. If our perspective in studying that photo is correct, the seats are split in a 40/60 configuration, which allows for flexibility when storing long items like skis or a two-by-four.

Range estimate based on EPA testing

While Volvo isn’t sharing specific dimensions, battery size or torque yet, the automaker claims a “best-in-class 400 miles on a single charge,” with all-wheel drive. That’s a preliminary estimate based on EPA test cycles.

“It turns range anxiety into range comfort, showing that electric driving is no longer a compromise,” the carmaker says. “Volvo Cars engineers have optimized the car’s range for realistic driving and what customers experience during their daily drive.” If the focus of product development was on real-world testing, then the Swedes certainly have plenty of opportunities to see exactly how arctic temperatures affect the range of their latest EVs.

From San Francisco to LA?

Volvo says a range of 400 miles – yes, that’s based on good weather, terrain, driving style and weight – will take the EX60 from Paris to Amsterdam, Stockholm to Oslo or even San Francisco to Los Angeles on a single charge, if you’re confident in this 370-mile jaunt.

And if you can find a functional 400-kilowatt fast charger, Volvo says the EX60 can add 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes, almost as fast as a gas stop. “A short coffee stop is now enough to recharge the battery and get back on the road.”

Megacasting and ‘smart algorithms’

The faster charging speeds are made possible by the new 800-volt electrical system and software developed in-house to “move energy to the battery more efficiently.” Volvo also credits partner Breathe Battery Technologies for developing ‘smart algorithms’ to continuously adjust how the battery draws power and ‘keep it in the ideal operating zone at all times’, regardless of the weather.

The EX60 is a product of Volvo’s SPA3 EV platform, which integrates the battery directly into the vehicle structure. The electric motors have been developed in-house, while the EX60 is the first Volvo car built with mega-casting that replaces hundreds of smaller parts with a single, high-precision casting to reduce weight and increase range.

Tune in on January 21st for the reveal

Volvo offers a surprising look at the upcoming SUV

The upcoming EX60 crossover could be the most important new vehicle Volvo brings to market this decade.

The Volvo EX60 will debut on January 21 at 12:30 PM ET and you can tune in to the livestream on Volvo’s website.

We don’t yet know how much the EX60 will cost in the US, but expect prices to be around $60,000 – halfway between the $40,000 EX30 and $80,000 EX90.

Until February 2, Volvo is offering a $7,500 EV lease reimbursement on the EX30 and EX90, as well as 0.99 percent financing for 36 months on select EX30 models.
