The claim was made in a social media post, which police said is being verified.
Multiple teams have been formed to determine the authenticity of the claim and track down the attackers, police said.
According to the post from an account with the username “Randeep Malik Anil Pandit”, the murder was carried out on behalf of the gangs of Lawrence Bishnoi, Jitender Gogi Maan, Hashim Baba and Kala Rana.
It was alleged that the victim, Vaibhav Gandhi, “interfered” in the gangs’ activities.
The post further said in Hindi and English that this incident was a warning that anyone who hinders their operations would be eliminated without notice.
Gandhi, a 35-year-old plastic pellet manufacturer, was shot dead near his factory in Bawana on Monday afternoon, police said.
The shooting happened around 12:51 p.m. as he stood outside his factory with a laptop bag. Preliminary investigation shows that three assailants on motorcycles approached him and tried to take the bag, they said.
“When the victim tried to escape, the assailants chased him for about 40 to 50 meters and fired several bullets. One bullet hit him in the chin, causing him to collapse,” a senior police officer said.
The attackers fled with the victim’s belongings. Gandhi was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.
Initially, police suspected the incident was a robbery gone wrong. However, the rise of the social media posts has shifted the focus of the investigation to possible extortion and organized crime, the officer said.
Several teams have been formed to investigate the matter. The teams are examining CCTV footage from the Bawana industrial area to identify the gunmen and reconstruct their escape route.
Police are also analyzing the digital footprint of the social media accounts mentioned in the message – Randeep Malik and Anil Pandit USA – to determine their origins and links to known gang members, officials said.
They said the Special Cell has been called in due to the alleged involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which has been linked to several high-profile murders across the country.
