The Philadelphia 76ers are getting closer to a point where they can start real conversations with teams about trades. After all, with most trade restrictions lifted in a matter of days, the front office won’t get the chance to perhaps make some much-needed upgrades in crucial areas, especially in the wings and frontcourt.
Unfortunately, they don’t really have a realistic chance of making a clear upgrade without parting ways with one of their core people. No team will realistically be enticed to make a deal with them for some of their players on expiring deals. And while fans will likely hate this idea, Jared McCain is someone who can get them someone who can be a real rotation upgrade.
McCain is starting to play well after a horrific period marking his return from injury. While his minutes and usage are still not as great as they should be, it is becoming clear that the coaching staff has recognized the indisputable fact that there is indeed a backcourt logjam.
Trading Jared McCain is the clear way for the 76ers to get a real upgrade
Suffice it to say, McCain is not as indispensable as he was a year ago. With the 76ers fully invested in their backcourt led by Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, supplemented by some Quentin Grimes, opportunities for the sophomore to resume his old form have become few and far between.
To best maximize his value, he could be someone the front office can use to acquire players they normally wouldn’t be able to acquire. He is already a sought-after asset in his own right. Combined with another player, the 76ers could have an even more attractive package for teams.
Philadelphia is nowhere near the contention as it is currently constructed – not when you see Oklahoma City, Detroit and the other top teams in the West play the way they do. A lot of that could be attributed to injuries that still plague the 76ers, but it also stems from a lot of funky lineup configurations due to the imbalance that still affects them every night.
As such, the 76ers could be forced to decide the fate of Jared McCain as one of the building blocks of the franchise much sooner than anyone expected, and while it could be a point of mockery for many, it could at best yield huge profits.
