The 25-year-old’s form further proves Sheffield United made the right Ruben Selles decision: Opinion News: The72 – Football League News

Sheffield United defender Sam McCallum has been a revelation for the Blades of late and confirmed the decision to sack Ruben Selles as the right decision.

Sheffield United are slowly progressing after a disastrous start to the season. The Blades are currently 18th in the table and have done well to save themselves from a potential relegation fight.

SUFC rehired Chris Wilder three months after his dismissal Ruben Selles was fired. Selles had lost all five of their league matches in charge, and during his short spell in charge they had scored just one goal.

The Blades undoubtedly made a mistake in sacking Wilder, and they look a lot stronger since his return. The decision to fire Selles was the right decision, and Sam McCallum’s performance since has provided another reason why this was so.

The 25-year-old mainly played on the bench under the former head coach. Since Wilder’s return, he has been a shining spark in the Sheffield United team. With SUFC finding good form, the left back could play a crucial role in the second half of the season.

Sam McCallum has proven his quality under Chris Wilder

McCallum has missed just four league games under Wilder this season and has been a reliable figure for the 58-year-old on his return to Bramall Lane. The 25-year-old played a consistent role for Sheffield United last season and was crucial to their successful campaign.

The left-back competes with Harrison Burrows and has often been a backup to the 23-year-old at SUFC. McCallum was probably the better of the two this season and was only dropped from the last two games due to illness.

According to FotMob, the Englishman creates almost two chances and makes 2.5 interceptions per game. His consistency at both ends of the pitch has made him a standout for the Blades this season.

Sheffield United can still participate in the play-offs

Despite a poor start to the season, Sheffield United have recorded some impressive wins of late and shown glimpses of last year’s quality. Their loss last weekend was their first defeat in six games.

Sheffield United’s record in the 2025/26 Championship season

Wilder has a lot of experience in the Championship and knows how to make long unbeaten runs. If SUFC can remain undefeated over the holidays, they could finish extremely close to the top six.

The Blades are 11 points away from the play-offs, but the second tier has been full of surprises so far, with more expected. There are still 25 games to be played and Wilder’s team cannot yet be ruled out.
