A team of tennis writers recently ranked the top 25 tennis matches of the first 25 years of the current century The second serve.
I wrote the epic 2009 Australian Open semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco. He is a clip from a match that is number 4 on the list:
“It just means more when you have to set your alarm for 3:30 a.m. to watch a spectacle unfold… What unfolded was an instant classic: a five-hour, 14-minute marathon of the highest quality that ended at 1:07 a.m. (9:07 EST!).
“What I remember most about the match was the absurdity of the basic rallies. Even the matches between Alcaraz and Sinner would be jealous of what Nadal and Verdasco produced from the back of the field.”
