Jacob Murphy is living the dream.
The lifelong Newcastle United is gradually ticking off the performances.
Jacob Murphy, one of Rafa Benitez’s many excellent signings, arrived at the club he supports in 2017.
Now he is the longest-serving player in the first team.
His latest tick on the list of achievements was finally adding a Champions League goal (against Qarabag) to the assists he had already provided in the competition, says Jacob Murphy. official club media: “It felt great! Also a relief. A few years back, playing in the Champions League was something I wanted to achieve and I managed to make my debut at San Siro (against AC Milan). Then it was the moment when I was able to get my first goal and assist. I would have done well to get a few assists, but that first goal alluded me and was a bit tricky to get. With a little help I finally got it!”
The winger’s goal restored United’s five-goal lead in Baku.
Now Jacob Murphy wants to finish the job and ensure that one more thing is checked off his wish list on Tuesday evening: reaching the last 16 of the Champions League: “This group has reached new heights in different ways over the last four seasons and this is another milestone we can achieve. If we can do that we will be super excited about it because we have done some really good things over the last few seasons and this will be another one to add to that. People watching at home would have been blown away if we hadn’t started in Baku. what we are capable of. Everyone in the Premier League knows that and we have given a good account of ourselves so far in the Champions League and a combination of everything going well for us has allowed us to perform at a very high level.”
Jacob Murphy struggled to make an impact in his early years at St James’ Park and to me he seemed to find it all a bit too much as he lacked the confidence to show what he could do in front of 50,000 fellow Newcastle United fans.
You certainly wouldn’t be suggesting a lack of confidence now!
Jacob Murphy turns 31 on Tuesday and is part of the leading group in the selection: “When I went to Sheffield Wednesday (on loan for the 2019/2020 season), I could see a resurgence. Everyone has a similar journey they want to go on. There are just different paths and that was my path. Luckily, when I went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday, things started to click for me. I came back and that’s when I felt Jacob Murphy 2.0 was formed. Personally, I had a few good seasons under Steve Bruce and then the gaffer (Eddie Howe) came in and the rest is history.
When Jacob Murphy came off the bench at the Etihad on Saturday, he made 250 appearances for Newcastle United, another milestone.
The winger is only the 50th player in the club’s entire history to reach this milestone, Jacob Murphy said: “You try to play as many games as possible. I never really had a number in my head of the total number of appearances I wanted to achieve here, but I was made aware by the kitman before the (Manchester City) game that if I went through it would be my 250th game. It was pretty cool! My parents and my family have always been part of the journey. They have helped me a lot. I have had a lot of teammates who have also helped me reach this number. from managers past and present who have really helped me helped to have such longevity at the club and a large number of appearances here. There are too many people to thank!’
