After failing to win the Saudi Pro League last season, Al Hilal focused Karim Benzema as their big signing in a bid to restore competitiveness. Despite his veteran status, the Frenchman has managed to showcase his scoring prowess; however, his arrival could lead to the departure of one of the stars of the teamWHO is reportedly eyeing a return to the Premier League ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
According to TEAMtalk it is Darwin Núñez would seek an exit from Al Hilal after being left out of the Saudi Pro League despite arriving for $74 million. As a result the Uruguayan is said to be pushing for a return to the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United reportedly the most interested. However, he could be forced to reduce his salary as no club is willing to pay him £400,000 per week.
In addition to the English team, the Uruguayan is also said to be interested in Atlético Madrid and Juventus. Nevertheless, both clubs could face difficulties in meeting a high transfer fee Al Hilal can try to recover the amount they paid for Núñez – something that would not be easy for either party. Without a place in the team’s rotation, Darwin could try to force his departure, potentially lowering the value of a future transfer.
Although it is almost certain that Núñez will leave Al Hilal before the 2026-2027 season, he would already be significantly affected from a sporting point of view. After not being able to play in the Saudi Pro League, the Uruguayan would only play five or six games in the AFC Champions League Elite – a very low number for the national team’s starting striker. As a result, he could lose his role in the team to Rodrigo Aguirre or Federico Viñas, who would arrive with competitive rhythm.
