Tesla’s shocking move: Cybertruck’s cheapest model disappears at night

Without warning, Tesla has removed the most affordable equipment level of the cyber truck from his website, so that it was effectively killed only five months after it was introduced. The Cybertruck rear -wheel drive (RWD) had a starting price of only $ 69,990, but in his absence the model with four -wheel drive (AWD) becomes the new basic model with a starting price considerably higher at $ 79,990.

The RWD Cybertruck has just been introduced in April. Tesla hoped that the lower price would stimulate sales that were disappointing since the truck was for sale at the end of 2023. To reach that lower price, Tesla sold the RWD Cybertruck with fewer functions than other cyber trucks. It was lacking in an adaptive suspension, a rear seat screen and had lower current figures and a lower cargo capacity. However, it had the longest range of a cyber truck at 350 miles.

What’s going on with CyberTruck sales?

Tesla has given no reason for the cancellation of the RWD Cybertruck. We can speculate that the model was not popular enough to make the continued production worthwhile, and so it was ax.

The sale of Cybertruck as a whole is disappointing, at least compared to the 250,000 units a year Tesla CEO Elon Musk had focused. The actual sale has been more at 22,000 units per year, according to Cox Automotive. In the first half of 2025, only 10,712 cyber trucks were delivered to customers, which is actually 7.3 percent less than in the first half of last year. Currently, the best-selling full-size electric pick-up truck in the US until the first half of 2025 is the Ford F-150 lightning with 13,029 units sold.

Many factors can be cited why the cyber truck has not met Tesla’s expectations. The company transferred and subdivision into terms of the price, the reach and the possibilities of the truck. The date of the sale was also delayed several times, giving competitors the opportunity to beat it on the market. And finally, there is Musk himself, who has become a distribution figure in the past year with his trip to politics.

Oh, and we can’t forget what the cyber truck looks like. The angular design and the stainless steel skin of the truck polarized from the moment that the cyber truck rolled on stage for the first time at the end of 2019. It does not seem that customers warm up the appearance.

When Musk first introduced the cyber truck, he claimed that the model with one engine, rear -wheel drive would have a basic price of $ 39,990. This is the model that Tesla just stopped and it was never sold for less than $ 40,000. Instead, the best Tesla was a basic price $ 30,000 higher. We do not need a rocket scientist to find out why the RWD Cybertruck was a bomb. Coincidentally, Musk is a rocket scientist, but still his promised $ 40,000 electric truck could not yield.

Other claims were made musk about the cyber truck that never came out. It was supposed to have a maximum range of 500 miles per load. It had to float. It had to have bulletproof glass. It was supposed to have a retractable slope in its tailgate. It was supposed to have a stainless steel exoskeleton. Instead, by the time the cyber truck went on sale, the center of specifications compared to the growing list of competitors, most of which do not look like an extra in a MAD Max film. Is the cyber truck a bad EV Pick -up? No, it’s just not close to classes that are leading if Tesla’s other vehicles have been.
