Terriers beat Eagles 3-1; Women face Northeastern in QF matchup

Terriers put together their most complete performance of the season, scoring twice in the opening frame and holding off #10/11 BC, 3-1, at Agganis Arena on Senior Night, taking three critical points in the Hockey East race.

Ryder Ritchie And Cole Eiserman produced the first goals and with the Eagles, who were 2-1 down and pushing for the equalizer, Jack Harvey sealed the win with an empty net score. Mikhail Yegorov led a strong defensive performance by BU, stopping 24 of 25 shots.

The win puts BU in a tie for sixth place in the competition Hockey East Standings with Northeast. Both teams have two games left. The Terriers have an outside chance of finishing fourth, but quite a few stars would have to align.

“It’s a big win for us,” Coach said Jay Pandolfo. “It’s great to see us play like that. Our guys understand what we are capable of when they play a certain way. I thought we played really well tonight, from the goaltender position.”

Like the two previous BU-BC games, which the Eagles won, BU came out quickly and aggressively, dominating shots (19-4) and possession in the O-zone in the opening period. But this time the Terriers were rewarded.

After several BU Class A chances were thwarted, the Terriers scored on the rush. Tynan Lawrence controlled and redirected a loose puck in the neutral zone Jack Murtagh and Ritchie away on a 2-on-1. The BC defender closed in on Murtagh, who passed to Ritchie for a one-time flick of the wrist past the goalkeeper Louka Cloutier. It was his seventh goal.

Late in the period, BU put a series of shots on goal. Harvey’s effort from just outside the crease and one through Kamil Bednarik were defended from the castle. The rebound went to Cole Hutsonwho sparked a passing attempt, then one-timed the puck from his office to Eiserman and beat Cloutier, who had lost his stick. Goal #14 for the Sophomores.

BU ended the period with two goals, but faced a penalty kick to open the second period due to a Gavin McCarthy rough call.

Terriers killed that man advantage and then Yegorov made one of his best stops then Landan Resendes got free behind the BU defense.

One stroke past Mick Frechette put BC back on the power play and they quickly converted. Dean Letourneau was lined up in the slot and fired past Yegorov, halving the Terriers’ lead.

A third BC power play and two for the Terriers yielded no further scores and the period ended with BU’s 2-1 lead intact. BU held the Eagles to just four even-strength points in the period, along with five on three power plays.

That almost changed early in the third period when a Terrier turnover in the defensive zone became a 3-on-1. Frechette’s diving play broke up Class A’s chance to keep BU on top.

After Yegorov was stimulated James Hagens‘ from the left circle with seven minutes left, BU capped off a long possession in the O-zone with an apparent goal from Jonathan Morello but it was disallowed due to goalkeeper interference.

With Cloutier brought in for an extra attacker, Eiserman controlled the puck deep in the BC zone, attracted a crowd of defenders and calmly delivered a pass to Harvey for an easy finish for his eleventh goal. Bednarik picked up the second assist.

The team completes the series Saturday at Conte Forum at 7 p.m. BU will look to duplicate Friday’s efforts and build momentum for the playoffs.

“We just watch the effort for 60 minutes and play the same way for 60 minutes,” Pandolfo said. That’s what we have to do. We just want to see another solid performance tomorrow night.”
