Taylor hoped Tattersalls Sale would be a ‘Grand Slam’

A foreign sender with the sales topper is not unheard of, but certainly not common. Moreso if the two entities do not share a continent. But that’s the situation that could unfold at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in Newmarket, England, when US-based Taylor Made Sales Agency returns perhaps the auction’s main attraction.

Bring luck which is co-owned by TaylorMade’s Medallion Racing, is expected to attract a significant amount of money when it enters the sales ring on December 2. The three-day sale begins on December 1, with Monday and Tuesday hosting the Scepter Sessions, periods of the sale that highlight the most sought-after mares on offer.

After boarding in 12 of her 13 starts and winning seven group/graded stakes with more than $1.7 million in earnings, it’s not hard to see why the daughter of Caravaggio is on the wish list of every big spender.

But for Taylor Made, the journey back to Tattersalls has been years in the making.

President and CEO Mark Taylor said the last time his company was a consignor at one of Tattersalls’ sales was in 2021. Taylor said he and his team are excited to be back in Newmarket.

“We’ve really had a lot of success there,” he said. “We have sold two fillies that have produced great Group 1 winners. We have taken some quality there in the past. And I think this is by far our best version.”

4-year-old Porta Fortuna, trained by Donnacha O’Brien, is the star of the show. She will be shipped as Lot 1734.

“She was probably the most talented two-year-old of her generation, but didn’t get the Cartier Award as a two-year-old, but came back and was Cartier three-year-old champion the next year,” Taylor said. “And I believe she is the first horse ever that was a Cartier Champion at three years old and is still offered as a horse in training. So she is kind of a collector’s item and a very unique offering.”

Originally it was a shipment of five mares, but with the withdrawal this is down to four Falling behind .

Participating in Porta Fortuna in the Scepter Sessions is Sharpen . She was shipped as Lot 1462 and is a daughter of two-time Australian champion sire Fastnet Rock and out of the It’s not you mare Sheranda .

Her pedigree is just part of the reason why Taylor is “really excited” about Sharpen.

“Donnacha O’Brien has a lot of confidence in her and thinks she is a progressive type who will only get better next season,” Taylor said. “And I think whether someone buys her and wants to keep her in Europe, or whether they want to bring her to America, she’s a very intriguing offering that could catch a lot of people’s attention, thinking about what’s in store for next year.”

lot 1658, Unexpected problems never reached her full potential, according to Taylor, but she has a black type to her name. She is 1-0-1 from eight starts and is the daughter of millionaire and 2012 Breeders’ Cup participant and father Star spangled banner .

“I think her form speaks to the quality and potential she had early on,” he said.

Taylor Made’s offering is completed Usdi Atohi (lot 1659). She is the daughter of two-time group 1 winner Ten sovereigns .

“(She’s) a very, very talented filly in her own right,” Taylor said. “Could continue training or go straight into someone’s broodmare band.”

The common thread between Taylor Made and a Tattersalls shipment is Medallion Racing. Medallion is co-owner of three of the four mares for sale this week.

“Since we started Medallion Racing (in 2017), we have tended to come with European fillies, and so we have had a few shipments there (with) horses that we didn’t think would make sense to bring back to America to sell.”

Although it is a smaller sale than Keeneland November, Taylor said the Mares Sale in December is condensed and moves at a slower pace, which makes it enjoyable.

“We are still relatively new to Tattersalls,” he said. “It’s not like Keeneland November, Fasig-Tipton November, we’re there every year. And that’s a bit like our World Series breeding stock. But I think Tattersalls has the same kind of feel on the European side, and there’s something about that environment that’s very iconic. When you’re in that circular sales ring and all the biggest players from around the world are there facing each other. And when it comes to the European offering, it’s the best of the best.”

If Porta Fortuna turns out to be the top seller, it will result in a ‘grand slam’ for the TaylorMade team. They topped the Keeneland Championship sale Sea in the run-up to the Breeders’ Cup with one stallion share of Not this time selling for $3 million; Fasig-Tipton will be attending the November sale A dash of happiness the mother of Ted Noffey sold for $6.2 million; and the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale with Luscious lips sold for $3.7 million.
