India will take on Namibia in their second Group A match of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on February 12. The Men in Blue started their campaign with a 29-run win over the United States of America in Mumbai on February 7, a match which India won despite Bumrah’s absence.
“It’s great news that Washington Sundar is joining the team because the Indian team has been patient with him. They have a lot of confidence in his abilities and the very fact that they stuck with him despite not being available for the start of the tournament means that they want to play with a similar combination,” Bangar said on Star Sports’ show ‘Follow the Blues’.
“For example, if there is no spin-bowling all-rounder available, Washington Sundar can certainly come in. But I don’t see him playing in Delhi. I definitely see Jasprit Bumrah making it into the playing XI, and the player to miss out would be the in-form Mohammed Siraj,” he added.
The former Indian batting coach was asked about the lessons for India ahead of their World Cup match against Namibia and cautioned against over-analyzing the match against the US. He added that the Indian team could afford to bat more conservatively if necessary, but stressed that they should not significantly change their overall approach.
“I don’t think Indian batsmen should overanalyze what happened in Wankhede against USA because the kind of approach that the Indian bats are playing with in T20 cricket these days is clearly fraught with risks. On days like these, when a few wickets might fall, and you still want to keep going hard, you are going to lose wickets in the clutches,” Bangar said.
“So it’s a learning process. Maybe take it a little bit easier, but don’t hesitate too much about your approach because that fearless approach has brought you a lot of success. So, continue to back your abilities and continue to play the way this Indian batsman has approached T20 cricket over the last 18 months,” he added.
