Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar opined that Tilak applies more pressure when he bats at number 3, but that is not the case when he bats lower in the order. The cricketer turned commentator also said that Tilak batting at number 6 will give Hardik Pandya an opportunity to bat higher up the order. He added that he was surprised to see Washington Sundar batting for Hardik in the match against South Africa.
“Tilak Varma has lowered the order. Good move by India. I have seen this guy deteriorating the order. I just feel he feels less pressure in upending the order than at number three. So I think this is the place for him in the bigger game that will follow, which also means Hardik Pandya got a chance to bat higher up in the batting order. I was just stunned to see Washington Sundar batting at number five in the last match against South Africa and Hardik Pandya at number five,” he said in a video on his Instagram account.
Manjrekar also heaped praise on Abhishek Sharma, who finally returned to form after scoring just 15 runs in his first four innings of the tournament. The opening batsman hit 55 off 30 balls, and what impressed Manjrekar most was how he waited for the slower deliveries instead of swinging his bat beforehand.
“Yes, he got a 50, but most importantly he handled the slow ball beautifully. A couple of sixes he hit, waiting for the slow ball to come to him, spotting it very early but not going after it. Just waiting for it to get close to him and then came the big swing of the bat to put that ball in the stands. So some very positive signs with India’s batting as that was more of a concern than the bowling,” Sanjay added Manjrekar to it.
India collected 256/4 in their 20 overs with Hardik also contributing a half-century. In reply, Zimbabwe were restricted to 184/6, with Arshdeep Singh starring with a three-for.
