Surprise my wife with a Daytona Violet X5 | Performance Center Delivery

We have just received my wife’s new BMW X5 XDRIVE40I in the Performance Center in South Carolina. This was my third time that I did a performance center delivery, after my M235i in 2014 and M2 in 2018, and each was a great experience. BMW makes it such a unique and memorable way to receive without extra costs, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who has the chance.

Background

I have been a BMW fan for as long as I can remember and I am lucky that I am a woman who shares that passion (or at least understands), partly thanks to her father a big BMW and Porsche enthusiast. Currently in the garage are my 2018 M2 and my 2024 X1 M35i. My wife has had her CPO 2018 X3 (M Sport, Alpine White with Cognac Leather Interior) since 2021, and it has been a great car for us through many large milestones.

With the arrival of our first daughter, my wife had desired a larger car, so I quietly got a build together based on everything I knew she would like and put an order for her, but didn’t tell her. When it was time to do paperwork a month before delivery, I finally told her that she got an X5 and that it would be Brooklyn Gray, her favorite of the standard colors. In reality I ordered it in Daytona Violet, an individual color she likes, and she had no idea until we walked into the delivery.

First impressions of the X5

After a two -day road trip back home from the Performance Center, these are my first impressions of the X5:

– The Daytona Violet Paint is beautifully personal and changes dramatically, depending on the light. It really makes the car stand out.
– I am very happy that we have chosen the 2-axle air suspension. The rich quality is excellent, flexible and comfortable (especially with the huge 22-inch wheels), but still planted.
– A lot of power of the 40i, at least as much as we were able to feel during the burglary period. What strikes most is how smooth the power output feels.
– Interior feels spacious and refined, especially in comparison with the outgoing X3. The cognac looks great against the purple exterior and the seats are extremely comfortable.
– I have Idrive 9 on my X1, and it is laggy and annoying in many ways. Idrive 8.5 In the X5 takes all good parts of Idrive 9, but lets them work smoothly and reliably. I don’t know how BMW could have taken such a step back from 8.5 to 9.
– The gas tank feels enormously compared to what we are used to, and it goes incredibly far on a single filling. On the trip of 700+ miles home we had around 27 mpg on average, which was better than expected.
– In general it feels like the perfect step for our growing family.

Get there

We flew from Miami to Greenville and were picked up at the airport in an X5 M60i and transported to the Hotel Hartness. The building was beautiful and a great way to start the journey.

Delivery day

As always, the experience of the performance center was fantastic. We started with instruction in the classroom, then driving exercises on the slip pillow, brake tests and rounds around their handling course. For such large SUVs, the X5 and X7 treated much better than expected. We also did the off-road course in the X5 later in the day, but I also include it in the video below.

When it was finally time for delivery, my wife had still not seen the car (although she had walked straight ahead). Walking in the bay and seeing the Daytona Violet X5 waiting for her was priceless. She was shocked and speechless when we came in and she saw the color. Daytona Violet is such a great heritage BMW color and shifts beautifully between deep purple and clear Violet, depending on the light. The great people in the Performance Center even helped me with another surprise by placing a BMW Babyracer that I had bought in advance for our daughter in the trunk, which I could also surprise my wife.

Seth then worked with us through all the ins and outs of our new X5!

We completed the day with lunch, the off-road course (see video above), a plant tour and a stop in the Zentrum Museum. The whole program was excellent and I want to give a large shout-out to the entire Performance Center team, especially Seth, who helped us to organize and coordinate everything, and drove, our main instructor, who was fantastic all day.

BMW CCA Museum

The morning after the birth we visited the BMW Car Club of America Museum, which had an incredible Alpina exhibition, including a Z1 Alpina, which is super rare and I had no idea that there was. I would really like to guess that every BMW enthusiast in the area is looking at it. For the coverage of twelve dollars per person it is a great stop and they change their exhibitions every May.

While we were here, we benefited from the fact that the X5 was still quite clean and their empty cargo space and some pictures. This color is personally great!

Been 1 – Greenville to Savannah

On the first stage of our return trip we went to Savannah for our overnight stop. We had a smooth ride and I really enjoyed the self (don’t skip your order!). We spent the night in Hotel Bardo, which was great! They even parked the X5 for and center outside the hotel. Another perfect photomans.

Lay 2 – Savannah to Fort Lauderdale

On the ride home we stopped in Daytona for lunch and our first fuel up. Best fitting with the Daytona Violet Paint. We also took the opportunity to take a few photos for the Speedway.

Arrived at home

From Daytona we continued the last stage of the trip back to Zuid -Florida, which completed an unforgettable trip of 700+ Mile home. In the driveway with the X5 and the parking next to our other BMWs felt the perfect end of the journey. We look forward to enjoying the X5 for many years to make many new memories in it.
