The Phoenix Suns made one of the stranger to be traded out of season this season and sent something on a few first round picks to get the 23-year-old center Mark Williams. A deal that was useful on the surface – but if you dig a little deeper – leaves fans more questions than answers.
Why they decided that a big man with a long injury history after just three seasons in the competition was a solution, it is unclear, whereby the organization also prepared Kaman Maluach 10th and still had Nick Richards in this schedule. Make no mistake – the suns would exchange Richards if they could find someone who would take him – but reach to Williams in the way they did was enigmatic.
Suns are forced to pay Williams more than should.
Adding a new layer of intrigues to the arrival of Williams is the fact that he is eligible for an expansion of his Rookie deal. You would think that the team here has a lot of leverage, given the injury history of Williams. They will certainly insist on performance -based stimuli that must be met in his next contract, but that will not solve what will be a striking problem.
Williams will try to secure as much money as possible and years on his next deal if he can – what he should – and that will leave the Suns with a headache on the road. His side can rightly claim that he is now the starting center for the franchise, because Richards is certainly not and Maluach is not close to.

If that is the case, he would have to earn money to start a big man. The Suns are now also among both aprons – and although they pay Bradley Beal for the next five years – their Petblad looks better than at the start of the summer. A fact that will certainly not be lost at Williams and his representatives.
But when Phoenix agrees to a deal with which it is probably not entirely familiar, they will be stuck to Williams. For a legitimate seven-footer, he does not have the defensive impact you would like to see, while mobility is already a problem for him because of his injuries. The hope is that Maluach develops into a beast, which would make Williams replaceable.
Why pay what is being hoped, will the dollars of your back -up center starter be, especially if he can only play 60 games per season? However, when that time comes, the Front Office will not find a willing trading partner. If they can’t shake Richards and the $ 5 million he owes next season, what hope will they have with Williams?
They will then be stuck with a back -up center that is paid too much compared to what he produces, although the alternative is even worse. That would be that Maluach does not become the player we all hope he can, and Williams stays as the starter in Booker’s 30s, and one that does not play as much as he should.
