The Phoenix Suns were extremely active this season, with no fewer than 11 new faces through the door while the franchise also said goodbye to Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. A signature that they did not cross the line was that of Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors. Looking at what they were supposedly willing to give up to get him, it is not difficult to see why.
The best package on the table that is rumor that Nick Richards, Grayson Allen and four seconds are round picks. The Warriors may have wanted that the Kuminga situation was resolved quickly – and that certainly has not happened but that is not nearly enough to come back for a 22-year-old for a ton of benefit.
Addition of Al Horford gives Suns the last chance to steal Kuminga.
The Warriors finally announced the signing of Center Al Horford on weekends, in a deal that had been in the making for months. The delay to get it done? The Kuminga situation, which took another turn when he was unveiled the player would not go to their media day. The strongest sign so far that the organization would go if they could.

That is why the Suns must go back with a final – take it or have the offer – to test the determination of the Warriors. It would probably mean that adding one of Ryan Dunn or Oso ighodaro, but it is clear that Golden State has reached the point where they just want to continue with this whole mess. They do not want to pay him what Kuminga feels that he deserves, while Suns’ owner Mat Ishbia will certainly do that.
From a basketball perspective, the addition of Horford also means fewer minutes for Kuminga, while the Warriors go all the way to veterans around Stephen Curry to try to win a new ring. The whole two timeline plan that they tried to perform a few years ago did not work, but the Suns have time by their side to try to get the best out of Kuminga.
The only reason not to do this from their own perspective is because of how regularly their own group already ensures media day and with the training camp that has started. Everyone is on the same page and there are no drama from the court to worry about. Just a reconstruction schedule that tries to sort it out together.
That may be reason enough to stay out of the Kuminga activities – but if you try to get Devin Booker back to the mountain top as quickly as possible – these are the kind of transactions you have to do. The prospect of adding Jonathan Kuminga was recently in the water as last week, but there may be one last run to make it happen.
