The Edmonton Oilers are a team in search of an identity. Longtime play-by-play voice Jack Michaels thinks that could come from a forward who was brought in to score but could serve as a more effective forward if he’s willing to shake things up.
During a recent discussion on Struddy’s WorldMichaels and Jason Strudwick talked about emotion and intensity. Michaels noted that every Oilers player first pointed out Trent Frederic taking on Mathieu Olivier despite what felt like an inevitable outcome, and also highlighted Andrew Mangiapane’s ability to make an impact. He calls him “a lighter, less talented version of Brad Marchand” and believes Mangiapane and the Oilers should abandon the idea that he will ever reach the goal-scoring numbers he achieved in Calgary and focus on being a pest.
The comments were not meant as an insult, but rather a compliment that Mangiapane can be an effective annoyance to other teams.
“[Mangiapane’s] a guy you absolutely despise on the other team,” Michaels said. “He’ll drive you crazy,” he added. Strudwick then argued that’s what the Oilers need from him right now. Both agreed they need him to bring that energy to this group as some players are flat.
Michaels noted that the Oilers sometimes lack the spark that comes from getting dirty and bullying. It’s not about fighting; it’s about players who make the game uncomfortable for the opponent and wake up a quiet bench. With Corey Perry gone, the team needs to find a few faces that can fill that role.
Which oil companies can regain the lead?
Players like Mattias Ekholm and Darnell Nurse have the physicality to set the tone, while Vasily Podkolzin shows flashes of bite that can inject energy. What the Oilers could really use is a player who thrives in chaos – someone who frustrates, provokes and pushes the pace when the team looks too comfortable.
Monday’s fight between Trent Frederic and a Blue Jackets forward was a reminder that emotions can be contagious. It’s not about the outcome of the fight – it’s about showing up.
