Chelsea are contacting Real Madrid to discuss the signing of Rodrygo Go in January

Real Madrid striker Rodrygo Goes has played fewer than 400 minutes of first-team football across 13 games in all competitions this season and has fallen significantly down the club’s pecking order under Xabi Alonso.

With Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior starting regularly, and players like Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz and Franco Mastantuono otherwise coming to the fore, Rodrygo’s situation has not shown any sign of improvement in recent weeks.

ESPN Brasil has gone so far when it comes to reporting that the Brazil international is fed up with how he is being treated in the Spanish capital and has opened the door to leaving Real Madrid as early as January after remaining in place last summer.

Caught on offside claims Chelsea have already spoken to Real Madrid to express their willingness to sign Rodrygo this winter, although it now remains to be seen whether the club are willing to let him leave mid-season.

Rodrygo’s swoop may have to wait until next summer

While all indications are that Rodrygo Goes will leave Real Madrid sooner rather than later, it is likely that the 24-year-old will have to wait until next summer to sort out his future as Los Blancos are expected to block his departure in January.

Given that Endrick is already expected to leave the club on loan in the winter, Rodrygo’s potential departure would leave Xabi Alonso with significantly less depth and experience in the final third heading into the business end of the season.

The timing of Rodrygo’s rumored departure in January also means that Madrid would not be able to sign a sufficiently capable replacement for him, as most clubs would want to keep key players in their squads until the end of the season.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are expected to rekindle their interest in the player next summer, especially if he does well with Brazil at the World Cup next year, although it remains to be seen how much Real Madrid are willing to sell him for.

On Transfermarkt, Rodrygo’s value is £70 million but with inconsistent game time and no goal to his name in the past eight months, it would be very surprising if the forward’s asking price came anywhere close to that figure.

However, he would be a great signing for the Blues, and a player who promises to be a huge upgrade on their current left winger, both in terms of experience and quality.
