Stoke City signed centre-back Ashley Phillips on a second loan in the summer. Spurs approved a Potters return for the youngster after an impressive 2024/25 season.
And Phillips has performed well again with SCFC. He has secured a starting place under Mark Robins despite some remarkable competition, consistently performing beyond his youth.
It’s safe to say the 19-year-old has also enjoyed his time in Staffordshire. So much so that Phillips is eyeing a third spell at Stoke City when the summer transfer window rolls around.

Despite his success at Stoke City last season, Phillips had to bide his time to regain his place. He was only used off the bench in the first three games of the 2025/26 championship season and was unused for four games after that.
Since then, however, Phillips has started all but one of the games he was available for. He missed a defeat to Ipswich Town through suspension in November and has started every league match since, playing all 90 minutes.
At just 20 years old, Phillips has reached 89 championship appearances. He made his breakthrough at Blackburn Rovers and spent a spell on loan at Plymouth Argyle, but after two SCFC loans the youngster has now made 71 appearances for the club.
No wonder he forgets he’s on loan. The Potters would certainly welcome his return in the summer, even if a third temporary spell seems more likely than a permanent deal.

Despite Phillips’ wishes, both he and Stoke City will have to wait for Spurs’ plans.
The former Rovers youngster is yet to make his senior debut for the north Londoners. However, he remains very highly rated by his parent club since joining from Blackburnand given his extensive championship experience at such a young age, there is a chance Phillips could be moved up next season.

It seems unlikely that SCFC will revive their play-off attack. It means another campaign of Championship football is likely to await, and that could damage their hopes of securing another loan from Phillips.
