Broad admitted that the Australian’s strength is that even his technique, which has changed throughout his career, does not provide a consistent solution for opposing bowlers. Broad stated that he was unable to find an error: “Evidently [Smith’s] Technology has changed everywhere, but I still can’t sit here and say, ‘well, this is how you get it out.’ He recognized that this lack of an obvious weakness is Smith’s greatest asset and called it one “incredible power.”

Broad lamented the hitter’s ability to hit good pitches, noting: “He’s incredibly difficult to bowl against. Sometimes you don’t feel like you’ve bowled a bad ball and it still goes for four.” He recalled a particularly painful memory from the 2017-18 series, in which Smith hit 239 in Perth. Broad described the demoralizing consistency of that innings, saying:: “I remember he got this big two hundred [239 in Perth in 2017] and I didn’t miss a middle of his bat for three days. He added: “Every ball I tried to bowl just hit the middle of his bat.” Broad concluded that Smith possesses rare mental strength, which explains the batter’s mentality: “He has the mentality of ‘Okay, this field suits me, and I can’t figure it out.'”

Ashes 2025-26: Broad names an England bowler who can dismiss Smith

Stuart Broad provided England with a clear target average for Smith that they needed to achieve to have any hope of winning the upcoming Ashes series. Smith’s career average of 56.02 rises to 59.70 when he bats at home in Australia, making the task even tougher for England’s bowlers.

Broad explained the team’s objective: “To win the series we have to keep him [his average] down to under 50, right?Broad explained the inevitability of Smith’s action: “He’s going to score a hundred, that’s what he does.” He quantified success, claiming: “[If] he has an average of 40, which is at least 15 below his career average, so you’re doing great. I think you should get him early.”

The former bowler stressed the urgent need to dismiss Smith early and issued a warning: “If England don’t celebrate their first 40 runs, it will be a long series.” Looking ahead to the upcoming series, which starts in Perth, Broad suggested Jofra Archer could be the key bowler to unlock Smith’s wicket.

Broad elaborated on the preferred method of discharge: “He’s being taken from behind, just being chased.” He concluded with an explanation of the mechanism: “Since Jofra Archer has the angle to pinch back towards the stumps, can he clip one away? Smith is looking for the pinch hold.” Broad also recalled an earlier English plan in 2019 to target the catches at the leg vortex, which Smith expertly denied, resulting in two hundred and one “incredible innings.”
