Sheffield Steelers let a lead of three goals slip, but recovered to beat Manchester Storm in the extension in the Utilita Arena.

“It was very nice, the fans lived tonight,” said Derek Gentile of the more than 8,000 stubborn crowd in Sheffield. “That certainly makes it easier. Manchester plays hard, many teams in this competition, and it takes some getting used to physicality. But we also have a number of big boys.”

In a very competitive opening period, Dominic Cormier and Brandon Cutler came closest to opening the score for their respective parties. That was until the storm was caught on a strange man for the first time in the game and the Steelers let them pay-evan Jasper who fed Robert Dowd for the first goal of the season of the season. Jasper made it almost two just before the buzzer sounded to end the period.

If Storm thought they had bad luck to be there with one after 20 minutes, they were even more disappointed to stay behind after the second. Mikko Juusola struck at 8:37 PM, just when Joseph Nardi’s penalty ended, to double the lead of the home team. With five minutes left in the period, Stephen Harper saw another rush set up Derek Gentile to bring the score to 3-0.

A few minors on the Steelers towards the end of the period gave the storm an extended Powerplay time, and they had it counted by 59 seconds when Stephen Johnson blended the shot of Kaleb for very long.

Only 63 seconds in period three was in storm with Johnson on Target to make a game of one goal. The visitors went to 48:57 when Johnson’s perfect pass Gary had allowed Haden to deviate the puck past McAdam.

Harper called Drew Derididid’s Dwarsbalk when the Steelers returned after he had served a high minor late in the regulations, but the teams did not have to be separated and took a point with the game on the way to extension.

After a review for the puck that crossed the line, with Deridder getting his glove on the goal line, the Steelers then received a powerplay in the extension for 94 seconds. Gentile collapsed Cormier’s Feed to win it for the hosts at 67:07.

I scored a few overtime goals, but none with such a roar! “He laughed pagan.” It was pretty cool! I like how passionate the fans are here, it’s a lot of fun. “
