Dundee Stars supported their victory in Belfast while opening the weekend with a 5-2 home victory on the Giants on Sunday evening.
“I think we played well,” Matt Berry van Stars started. “From the start we played hard, took a lead and stayed with a full sixty, so I think we are happy with our efforts.”
“I thought Dundee played well, they let us work for every centimeter outside and in the end we have to perform better,” Giants captain David Goodwin brings. “That is twice that they have hired it, we have higher standards than that a bit unhappy but back to work this next week.”
Craig Garrigan opened the score and got Dundee early on the board with his first of the calendar year at 02:53. Drydn Dow sent a pass from under the goal line and found Garrigan only for the Giants network that chased the puck along Alexis Gravel to make it 1-0.
It wasn’t long before Belfast was the same, while Reid Irwin sent a shot from the Faceoff circle that stayed off at 5:08 am from a Dundee stick and past Jarrett Fiske.
A shot from the point of Jackson Desouza was initially blocked by a defender of Belfast, but the puck was friendly to Ben Almquist, who shot it in the net and the lead of the stars at 11:26.
Dundee struck again early, this time by Spencer Naas who used a delay of the game penalty against the giants and the puck shot along the cushions of gravel at 20:32. This led to both a time-out and a goalkeeper for the visitors.
A rough fine against Karl Boudrias gave the stars their second PowerPlay chance of the period, which Hampus Olsson converted at 25:24 after collecting a rebound in Close and threw home to bring 4-1.
Nicolas Guay cut the shortage almost immediately at 25:58 in two, wore the puck in the zone of the stars and shot a wrist of the high lock through the traffic to beat Jarrett Fiske.
Matt Berry benefited from long-term pressure in the Giants zone, took the puck up behind the net and pushed it along the pillows of a vast Jackson whistle to bring the score to 48:34.
“It was nice to get on the board tonight, I was a bit cold the last two games, but I must have the team and my line mates that worked very hard and found me a few times,” Berry added. ” We had a hard time keeping leads a few times this season a few times. We get one and seem to have teams come back, so tonight it was nice to get the two goals in the third and to keep it. It was huge for our group to see how they could play with a lead and have to keep the lead, so hopefully we will go that in the future. “
The giants maintained consistent pressure for the rest of the period and wanted to be equalized again. Nevertheless, Jarrett Fiske turned all the shots and assured the two points for the stars with a 5-2 victory.
“I think Dundee just plays harder than we,” concluded Goodwin after two defeats for the stars. “They win more battles than we, they compete a little harder. There is now a lot of parity in this competition, it is really a game of centimeters and they come from those fights with the puck. We had a lot of possession, but much of it was perimeter and eventually Dundee came to us when they had their widespread.”
