Stanford hires former Nike CEO John Donahoe as his new athletic director, According to ESPN. The move marks a shift from traditional athletic director, while Stanford was looking for a candidate with an extensive business experience instead of just a typical sports administration round.
Donahoe, a 65-year-old Stanford-Alumnus, brings a unique mix of business leadership and a deep bond with the university. He graduated from the Dartmouth College with a diploma in the economy, later obtained an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and held a position twice in the Business School advisory board. His professional career includes serving as a CEO of Nike for almost five years. He emerged to Leiden the global sportswear giant in January 2020 before he left his role in October 2024 in October 2024 and remained as an adviser until January of this year.
Before Nike, Donahoe and later the CEO of Ebay, the chairman of PayPal and an old partner at Bain & Company, was a top management consultancy. He was also a member of Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees from 2003-12.

Donahoe fills the vacancy left by Bernard Muir, who resigned at the end of the recent academic year after 13 years in the work. He announced his decision in February. The transition comes a year after Stanford joined the ACC after more than a century as a member of the PAC-12.
