The US Open, which was one of only two tournaments that the young Canadian Marina Stakusic played this summer, did not end well. A loss of the second round, a back problem, some tears.
But the 20-year-old started a rebound on the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open Tuesday
Stakusic only won her second WTA-Tour level match of the year in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over the much higher-ranked Polina Kudermetova, to continue to a second round meeting with No. 3 Seed Jelena Ostapenko.
That now sounds like a good score. But it was even more dramatic than that.
Kudermetova had risen 6-3, 5-1 and served before the match in the second set of all to be refused when Stakusic won six consecutive games.
And at 4-4 in the third set they were interrupted by rain for more than 90 minutes.
When they returned, Kudermetova served at Love-40.
She won only one point and made four mistakes to transfer the game to Stakusic. Who would like to accept it.
There were a total of 23 double errors – nine by Kudermetova, 14 for Stakusic.
There were 28 breaking points and 16 breaks (eight eight).
Stakusic is now officially a bit of a role. She defeated Amandine Hesse from France and no. 8 Seed Iryna Shymanovich from Russia (4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) with more rain recessions) in the qualification to reach the main drawing.
And she has achieved some good results in Mexico historically.
She made the quarterfinals of a WTA 125 in Puerto Vallarta earlier this year-one of the only two tournaments this year in which she won back-to-back competitions at every level, and this included a walkover.
And she won a WTA 125 in Tampico last October.
A year ago, Stakusic made the quarterfinals on the same WTA 500 Guadalajara tournament.
In particular, in the second round, she stroked Ostapenko Van Streek, then number 12, in a third set of Tiebreak-7-0, the score was.
Is the past prologue? We will see.
