Panic gripped the busy Jaipur district late Friday night when a speeding Audi went out of control and crashed into pedestrians and roadside vendors, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others in a scene described by witnesses as “pure chaos.”

The accident took place near Kharabas Circle in Journalist Colony area of Jaipur where the luxury vehicle first rammed into a road divider before veering sharply towards the side of the road. The car then drove nearly 100 feet through carts and makeshift stalls, crushing everything in its path.

“It came with terrifying speed. People were screaming and running for their lives,” an eyewitness said, adding that the toll could have been much higher if people had not managed to disperse in time.

More than a dozen carts and kiosks were destroyed by the impact. A parked car was also hit with such force that it flipped over, underscoring the severity of the collision. The stretch, usually busy well into the night, was littered with rubble, broken carts and injured victims screaming for help.

Police teams from Muhana and Journalist Colony police stations rushed to the spot and shifted all the injured to hospitals. Twelve victims are being treated at SMS Hospital and Jaipuria Hospital, while four others were discharged after first aid.

Muhana SHO Gurubhupendra Singh said preliminary findings indicate reckless driving. “The Audi was driven at a very high speed. There is a strong suspicion that the driver was under the influence of alcohol,” he said. The vehicle has been seized and extensive investigations are underway.

The incident attracted the attention of senior state officials. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma directed city officials and hospital authorities of Jaipur to ensure proper and timely treatment of the injured.

Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa visited the accident site and confirmed that four people were in the Audi at the time of the crash. “One person died after being crushed by the car. One of the occupants has been taken into police custody,” he said, adding that treatment of the injured was underway.

Police said the suspects are residents of areas near Jaipur. Further action will be taken once the investigation, including medical and forensic reports, is completed.
