Notts County have confirmed that Sonny Aljofree has returned to Manchester United after a frustrating loan spell.

Aljofree’s time at Notts County

United are not expected to be busy in January, especially when it comes to making signings and strengthening Ruben Amorim’s squad options.

However, a number of unresolved transfer matters remain, particularly regarding the future of a number of players in the club’s youth academy.

With United out of Europe this season, first-team minutes are likely to be in short supply for youngsters, forcing the Red Devils to be creative so as not to hinder their progress. For the club, moves to the Championship or other English lower divisions represent the most likely path forward.

A few summer loanees have since returned, including Toby Collyer after an injury-marred spell at West Brom. A report from The Peoples Person stated that Aljofree and goalkeeper Elyh Harrison would also be leaving Notts County and Shrewsbury respectively.

Aljofree had a very positive start to life in Notts County. He made 11 appearances, including 10 starts for the League Two outfit.

However, he has not appeared for the team since the end of September.

Notts County statement on Aljofree

A Notts County Statement read: “Sonny Aljofree has returned to Manchester United with our best wishes for the future.”

“The defender made 11 appearances after joining us on loan this summer, scoring once in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town.”

United are likely to look for possible next loan destinations for the Plymouth-born 21-year-old.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim and his players return to action on Sunday when they take on arch-rivals Leeds United at Elland Road.
